Chapter 2

The red digital numbers on the explosive device reflected in Elena’s tear-filled eyes. The timer read forty-five minutes. Her breathing was ragged, her chest heaving against Leo’s small, warm body. She kept her right hand firmly clamped around the device, her thumb resting dangerously close to a toggle switch wired to the top.

Diane stared at the bomb, her mouth slightly open. The arrogant posture she had carried just seconds ago had vanished entirely.

"Is that a joke, Elena?" Diane whispered, her voice trembling.

Elena carefully shifted her weight on the beige carpet, shielding Leo with her left shoulder.

"Lock the door, Mom," Elena said.

Diane took a hesitant step backward, her sneakers squeaking softly against the floor. She looked desperately at the brass doorknob, calculating if she had enough time to turn it and sprint down the suburban driveway.

"I am leaving right now," Diane stated.

Elena’s thumb brushed against the steel toggle switch. The tiny metallic click echoed sharply in the sudden quiet of the living room, cutting through Maya’s distant crying.

"If you open that door, we all die together," Elena replied.

Diane’s eyes darted frantically from the heavy black package to Elena’s cold, unwavering expression. Slowly, painfully, Diane reached behind her and turned the deadbolt. The lock engaged with a heavy thud.

"Elena, are you there?" Daniel’s voice called out from the phone on the floor.

"I am here, Daniel," Elena answered, not looking away from Diane.

"I need your verbal authorization to execute the absolute asset freeze on the Morgan Estate," Daniel said.

Diane took a step forward, her hands raised in a placating gesture. The sports bag on her shoulder suddenly looked heavy and absurd.

"Daniel, wait, she doesn't know what she's doing!" Diane yelled toward the phone.

Elena adjusted the medical brace on her leg, wincing as a sharp spike of pain shot through her knee.

"Execute the freeze, Daniel," Elena commanded.

"Understood, processing now," Daniel replied, the sound of rapid typing bleeding through the phone's speaker.

Diane dropped her sports bag to the floor. She looked at her daughter as if she were looking at a complete stranger. The bright sunlight illuminating the living room suddenly felt suffocating.

"You are throwing away your own children's inheritance!" Diane pleaded.

Elena looked down at Leo, gently kissing the top of his head. The boy’s sobs had reduced to wet hiccups, though a nasty red bruise was already forming on his cheek where he had struck the coffee table.

"My children will be fine," Elena said softly.

Diane took another step forward, pointing a manicured finger at the bomb.

"Where the hell did you even get that?" Diane demanded.

Elena looked back up, her expression turning into a mask of pure ice.

"Mark left it for me," Elena answered.
