Chapter 11 - Daniel confronts his mother

Daniel did not go to Diane’s house.
He requested communication through lawyers.
Then she asked for one phone call.
He agreed.
Recorded with consent according to applicable law? Better attorneys arranged a conference where counsel present and no secret recording. Notes preserved.
Diane said:
“Your wife has turned you against me.”
Daniel answered:
“Noah’s bruises turned me against what you did.”
“I disciplined him.”
“You chained him.”
“It was loose.”
“You put it around his neck.”
“He could breathe.”
I closed my eyes.
The fact she thought that helped terrified me.
Daniel said:
“You locked me in the laundry room too.”
Silence.
Then:
“You survived.”
He looked at me.
There.
Not denial.
“You think that makes it okay?”
“You were impossible.”
“I was seven.”
“You became successful.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“I became terrified of making mistakes.”
She laughed softly.
“Everyone is terrified of something.”
Then Daniel asked:
“Did Dad know?”
His father, Richard Carter, had died eight years earlier.
Diane said:
“He worked.”
Not an answer.
Then:
“Did he know you locked me in?”
“He knew you needed discipline.”
Again.
Different question.
Then Daniel said:
“You are not seeing Noah.”
“You don’t control that alone.”
“Emily and I both agree.”
“I’m his grandmother.”
“That is a relationship. Not a license.”
Diane became quiet.
Then:
“You’ll regret humiliating me.”
Daniel ended call.
May you like
Not because he had won.
Because there was nothing left to learn.
