Chapter 24 - Noah remembers the square

Almost a year had not passed; keep within months. About eight months after discovery.
Noah started a new preschool.
First weeks:
Fine.
Then teacher put colored tape squares on floor for a music game.
Noah froze.
Would not step inside.
Cried.
Teacher called me.
Not because he was “bad.”
Because she knew his safety plan.
I came.
He sat under a table.
I stayed nearby.
“Blue square?”
He nodded.
“Do we have to go in it?”
“No.”
“Teacher mad?”
“No.”
“Food?”
“You get lunch.”
He crawled out slowly.
The school changed the game.
No dramatic accommodation meeting.
Just:
Use circles instead.
Then therapy.
Camille helped him distinguish:
A shape.
From what Diane did with it.
The goal was not to remove every square from his life.
It was to restore choice.
Weeks later he stepped into a hopscotch box at playground.
Then jumped out.
Nothing happened.
He laughed.
I almost cried.
Did not make him perform healing for me.
I kept pushing the stroller? He's four, no stroller needed. I sat on bench and watched.
Then Daniel said:
“You know he may remember pieces of this forever.”
“I know.”
“Does that mean we failed?”
“No.”
That answer took months to become possible.
We failed to see some signs.
May you like
We also stopped it.
Those truths could exist together.
