Chapter 10 - Home Was No Longer Home

I went to Caroline’s apartment.

The first night, I barely slept.

At three in the morning I wanted water.

Her guest room was upstairs.

Kitchen downstairs.

I reached the top step.

Stopped.

My body refused.

Not pain.

Fear.

Caroline found me sitting there ten minutes later.

She did not tell me:

You’re safe.

People say that when they want fear to disappear on command.

Instead she sat beside me.

“What do you need?”

“Water.”

She went downstairs.

Came back with three bottles.

Put them beside my bed.

The next night I never approached the staircase.

Recovery began with bottled water.
