Chapter 7 - Judith’s Version

Police interviewed Judith separately.
Her first statement:
“Nora slipped.”
Then:
“I reached toward her.”
Then:
“We may have bumped.”
Then:
“I was angry, but I would never throw someone down stairs.”
Language moved as evidence narrowed the options.
She denied an intentional shove.
Graham told police he had not witnessed the initial contact.
True.
Then the officer asked:
“What did your wife say immediately afterward?”
Graham answered:
“She said Mom pushed her.”
“Did you believe her?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Then why ask her to say she slipped?”
Silence.
Finally:
“I knew what an accusation like that would do.”
“To whom?”
Another silence.
May you like
“Our family.”
That answer entered the official record.
