Chapter 19 - Divorce

Our divorce was boring in the way real divorces often become after dramatic beginnings.

Bank statements.

Home valuation.

Retirement accounts.

Furniture.

Insurance.

Tax questions.

The house mattered.

Graham wanted it.

I did not.

Too many stairs.

Too many rooms containing conversations I had spent years misremembering.

He refinanced.

Bought out my share.

At one point I wanted to abandon several valuable items just to avoid seeing him.

Mara stopped me.

“Emotional exhaustion is not a reason to give away marital property.”

Annoying.

Correct.

We divided things properly.

The divorce finalized fourteen months after the fall.

Outside the courthouse, Graham cried.

I cried too.

You can end something correctly and still mourn the version you thought you had.
