Chapter 14 - Dr. Mercer Was Careful

I saw Dr. Mercer at a follow-up clinic.
He reviewed recovery.
Wrist healing.
Rib healing.
Pain management.
Then I asked:
“When you said the scans told a bigger story, did you already know what was happening?”
“No.”
That answer surprised me.
“I suspected there was more context.”
“Because of the old injuries?”
“Yes. And because your husband was attempting to remain in the room while you looked frightened.”
He continued:
“But neither of those proves abuse.”
“What did?”
“Your account. Then corroborating evidence.”
Good medicine is sometimes disappointing to people who want magical certainty.
X-rays cannot identify a perpetrator.
Scans cannot read intention.
They can reveal injuries.
Timing.
Patterns worth investigating.
The rest comes from people.
Records.
Statements.
Context.
Dr. Mercer had not solved my life from an image.

He noticed enough to create privacy.
That was what I needed.
