Chapter 24 - The Safe Changes

The safe remained behind wardrobe.

For years it symbolized betrayal to me.

Documents.

Legal letters.

Revocation.

Eventually those cases closed.

I removed most files.

Stored with attorney or secure archive.

What went into safe instead?

Passports.

Birth certificate.

Insurance policies.

A small external drive.

Emergency cash.

Normal.

One day Ethan, age seven, saw me open it.

“What’s empire thing?”

I froze.

He remembered.

Children always remember lines adults hope disappeared.

“What?”

“You told Dad empire ends.”

I laughed nervously.

“You heard?”

“Yes.”

“What do you think it meant?”

“Treasure.”

Of course.

“No treasure.”

“What was?”

“Important papers.”

“Boring.”

“Extremely.”

“Why Dad scared?”

“Because papers were about adult money problems.”

“Can I see?”

“When you are much older if you really want.”

He shrugged.

“Okay.”

Mystery died because truth was boring enough.

Good.
