Chapter 7 - The Bank Meeting

Meredith and I met Harbor Commonwealth’s fraud counsel.
Ryan’s attorney joined.
No police yet.
Not every suspicious document becomes immediate criminal case.
Bank wanted facts.
The altered guaranty consisted of:
Four pages drafted by Reed Development Group counsel.
One signature page scanned from my prior limited guaranty.
A PDF assembly history showing Ryan’s corporate account had uploaded final file.
Email chain:
Company controller:
Need Natalie execution before Friday.
Ryan:
She already signed. Use prior signature packet for now. I’ll get clean originals later.
There.
“Use prior signature packet.”
Ryan’s attorney tried:
“Temporary administrative placeholder.”
Bank counsel asked:
“Was Mrs. Reed told?”
No.
“Did the bank rely?”
Yes.
Credit line increased by $425,000 after receipt.
There.
Material.
Ryan said:
“I intended to replace it.”
When?
“Later.”
How much later?
Eighteen months had passed.
No replacement.
No disclosure.
The home-support authorization was worse.
Email from Linda to Ryan:
Natalie will never sign if you call it collateral. Put it under household support package and deal with explanation after closing.
I read it twice.
Linda stared at the table.
Ryan’s attorney asked for break.
I said no objection.
During break I went to bathroom and vomited.
Not dramatic.
My body finally caught up.
When I returned, Meredith asked:
“Continue?”
“Yes.”
Because the problem with people making choices for you is that recovery requires choosing deliberately, even small things.
Continue.
Stop.
Sign.
Don’t sign.
May you like
I was learning again.
