Chapter 16 - Midland did not know

People immediately blamed Midland Retail Partners.
Investigators found no evidence Midland executives knew Gary intended to manipulate a guardianship proceeding.
Their deal proposal was aggressive.
Not criminal.
Their communication with Gary concerned:
Store renovations.
Project schedules.
Potential contracts.
One Midland executive had written:
Any ownership approvals must be obtained lawfully through trustees and beneficiaries. We will not participate in family disputes.
Gary apparently believed he could solve the family dispute himself.
Midland withdrew from negotiations once the scandal became public.
