Chapter 8 - I would turn eighteen in five months

My eighteenth birthday was five months away.

That mattered.

Under Dad’s trust:

I would not receive every share immediately.

But at eighteen I gained several important rights.

I could:

Receive independent financial advice.

Vote a defined portion of the shares attributed to my subtrust.

Approve or reject certain extraordinary transactions.

Select an independent observer for future trust reviews.

And, most importantly, block specific changes affecting my beneficial interest.

Gary knew.

Five months.

After my birthday, persuading Mom was no longer enough.

He would need to persuade me.

Gary had tried.

Dinner conversations.

“Brooke, do you want to spend your whole life worrying about hardware stores?”

No.

“Wouldn’t you rather diversify?”

Maybe.

“Would you ever sell?”

I said:

May you like

“I don’t know.”

Gary hated that answer.
