Chapter 16 - Maribel returns to the pool

For three weeks Maribel avoided the backyard.
Then one afternoon she asked:
“Can I swim?”
“Yes.”
I stayed nearby.
She wore flotation? At eight and presumably can swim. But after incident, we keep supervision.
She stood at the same edge where I caught her.
Looked down.
Then:
“Did Presley think I couldn’t swim?”
“I don’t know.”
“She knows I can.”
“Being pushed unexpectedly can still be dangerous.”
She nodded.
Then jumped in herself.
Not as a cinematic triumph.
She simply wanted to swim.
Later she asked if Presley could eventually visit.
“Maybe,” I said.
“When?”
“When you want, when her mother believes she can behave safely, and when everyone agrees.”
“Not Delphine?”
“No.”
May you like
Maribel looked relieved.
That mattered.
