Chapter 1

The man who stepped from the SUV was named Owen Pierce.
He was fifty-three, a real-estate attorney and independent trustee who had handled the legal structure surrounding Naomi’s home since her husband Mark died four years earlier.
Naomi had not seen him in almost six months.
Carla clearly had.
“You called him?” Carla asked.
Naomi ignored her.
Owen walked directly toward Lily.
He did not look at the house.
He did not look at Carla.
He crouched several feet from the little girl.
“Can I come closer?”
Lily was still crying.
Naomi nodded for her.
Owen moved carefully.
The injury looked painful but not catastrophic.
A long red welt was already forming along Lily’s right leg, with a small break in the skin near the knee.
Naomi’s mother-in-law, Diane Bennett, stood behind Carla.
“This is ridiculous.”
Owen looked up.
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“A six-year-old was struck with a steel object.”
“She was disciplined.”
Naomi stood.
“Say that again.”
Owen lifted one hand.
“Not now.”
Naomi hated being told that.
Then she realized he was right.
Lily came first.
An ambulance was called.
Naomi’s father, Robert Hale, remained beside the grill.
He had barely spoken since the incident.
That bothered Naomi more with every passing minute.
She looked at him.
“You watched her.”
Robert’s face tightened.
“I didn’t see it coming.”
“You were ten feet away.”
“Everything happened fast.”
“You didn’t move after.”
Carla cut in.
“He was shocked because you went insane.”
Naomi looked at her sister.
“You hit Lily with a skewer.”
“She was kicking the swing into people.”
“She is six.”
“She needs boundaries.”
Naomi stepped toward her.
Owen moved between them.
“Police are coming.”
Carla’s confidence weakened.
Only slightly.
Diane pointed toward Owen.
“You don’t control this family.”
Owen looked at her.
“No.”
Then he glanced toward the large white house behind them.
“But legally, I control decisions involving this property.”
Silence.
Carla stared at him.
Robert looked at the ground again.
Naomi caught it.
“What does that mean?”
Owen turned to her.
“We talk after Lily is examined.”
The ambulance arrived.
Naomi rode with her daughter.
Owen followed in his SUV.
Carla remained behind with Diane and Robert.
At the hospital, doctors found deep bruising but no fracture.
Lily would recover physically.
Emotionally was another question.
While a nurse cleaned the small scrape, Lily whispered:
“Aunt Carla said we were going to lose our house anyway.”
Naomi stopped.
“When did she say that?”
Lily looked frightened.
“Before.”
“Before what?”
“Before she got mad.”
Naomi remembered Owen’s words.
I control decisions involving this property.
The assault suddenly had another edge.
May you like
And for the first time, Naomi wondered whether Carla had raised that skewer because Lily misbehaved—
or because Lily had heard something she was never supposed to hear.
