Chapter 10

Carla’s cloud backup contained a voice memo.

She had recorded it herself.

Not for Naomi.

Not for Diane.

For her own attorney after the barbecue, apparently trying to preserve her preferred version before police interviewed her.

That choice destroyed her.

In the recording, Carla said:

“I only meant to scare Lily and make Naomi come after me. Dad had the phone set up. Once Naomi hit me, Diane could show the court she was violent around the kid.”

Then Carla tried to explain the skewer.

She claimed Lily moved at the wrong moment.

Forensic review of Robert’s video contradicted that.

Carla did not swing past Lily.

She swung directly toward her leg.

The major twist became clear.

The barbecue confrontation had been staged as bait.

The plan was not originally to seriously injure Lily.

It was to provoke Naomi into a visible physical reaction that could be recorded and later used in an emergency guardianship application.

Diane wanted temporary influence over Lily’s property interests.

Robert needed the Westline deal to survive because of his guarantee and debts.

Carla wanted her consulting money and believed she could push Naomi into losing control.

The guardianship petition would then describe Naomi as violent and emotionally unstable around her child.

If a court limited Naomi’s authority—even temporarily—the group planned to ask for an independent property guardian willing to consider selling the rear acreage.

They did not need permanent custody of Lily.

They needed procedural leverage.

The three clues had been there.

Robert’s phone was positioned before the conflict and Carla specifically told him she needed Naomi’s reaction.

Diane had a draft guardianship petition before the barbecue containing a blank section for “recent violent conduct.”

And Carla had already told Lily that Naomi would “get in trouble” and Diane would take care of her.

The skewer was the escalation no one could later pretend was accidental strategy.

Carla decided frightening Lily would guarantee Naomi reacted.

Then she struck the child hard enough to leave an injury.

Diane did not order the strike.

Robert did not know Carla would do it.

But both had knowingly participated in the trap surrounding it.

They created the stage.

Carla chose how cruelly to use it.

Naomi sat in Maya’s office after hearing the voice memo.

She did not cry.

For several minutes, she said nothing.

Finally:

“They needed me to become the dangerous mother.”

Maya nodded.

“And when I protected my daughter, they were going to use that as proof.”

“Yes.”

Naomi looked at the photograph of Lily’s injured leg.

“My sister hit a six-year-old because she knew I would move.”

“Yes.”

Owen spoke from across the table.

“The property transaction is dead.”

Naomi turned toward him.

“No.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“The transaction was never the worst part.”

She looked at Maya.

“My daughter needs to know none of this happened because she did something wrong.”

Maya nodded.

“And the rest?”

May you like

Naomi’s face hardened.

“The adults can explain themselves to judges.”
