Chapter 14

The Bennett house changed.
Not ownership.
Culture.
Naomi installed new cameras around the backyard.
Not because she wanted to live under surveillance.
Because nobody would ever again control which angle existed.
The swing stayed.
Lily initially wanted it removed.
Then one afternoon she changed her mind.
“Can we paint it?”
“What color?”
“Purple.”
So they did.
Owen hated the paint choice.
Lily informed him that his opinion was unnecessary.
He accepted the ruling.
Maya visited for dinner after the legal cases ended.
She brought wine for Naomi and a puzzle for Lily.
No paperwork.
That felt strange.
After dessert, Naomi stood near the back door looking toward the grill.
Maya joined her.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“That sounded suspiciously fast.”
Naomi smiled.
“I’m getting there.”
She looked at the yard.
“For months I wanted to sell this house just so nothing here could remind Lily of them.”
“And now?”
“It’s her house.”
Maya nodded.
“Eventually.”
“I don’t want Carla deciding she loses that too.”
The trust remained unchanged.
Lily’s ownership interest stayed protected.
Naomi retained occupancy rights.
Any future sale would require independent review.
No family facilitation fees.
No secret guardianship strategy.
No relative’s debt counted as Lily’s responsibility.
Diane sent one letter requesting supervised contact.
Naomi gave it to Dr. Reeves.
The therapist recommended no contact yet.
Naomi followed that advice.
Carla sent nothing.
Robert sent birthday cards.
Maya asked:
“You let Lily see them?”
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
Naomi looked thoughtful.
“Because I’m still trying to separate what protects her from what punishes him.”
Maya nodded.
That was exactly the right problem to be thinking about.
Not whether Robert deserved pain.
Whether Lily benefited from contact.
May you like
Those were different questions.
Naomi had learned not to confuse justice with access.
