Chapter 8

Naomi made the decision Maya warned would permanently alter the family.

She filed for a protective order covering Lily.

Not only against Carla.

Against Diane too.

The petition sought no-contact restrictions while the guardianship and property conduct were investigated.

Then Naomi did something more consequential.

She authorized Owen to open every trust record involving attempted sales, side agreements, consulting payments, property valuations, and communications with relatives.

Full disclosure.

No family confidentiality.

If the records showed misconduct by Naomi, Owen could report that too.

If Mark’s old estate planning contained embarrassing financial arrangements, they would come out.

If Naomi herself had mishandled trust-related expenses, she could lose credibility.

Owen looked at her across Maya’s conference table.

“You’re giving me broad authority.”

“I know.”

“I may find things you dislike.”

“I know.”

“And once I provide records to the court, you cannot put them back in the drawer.”

Naomi looked toward Lily through the glass wall.

Her daughter was building a puzzle with Maya’s assistant.

“Do it.”

Maya asked:

“You’re sure?”

“No.”

Naomi signed anyway.

The decision was hard to reverse because the trust audit became part of the guardianship record.

Westline received a formal notice that no sale negotiations could proceed during the review.

Robert’s $180,000 guarantee became exposed.

Carla’s consulting arrangement became exposed.

Diane’s correspondence with the family-law attorney became subject to scrutiny where privilege rules allowed facts and nonprivileged materials to surface.

The family exploded.

Robert called Naomi crying.

“You destroyed me.”

She stood in her kitchen.

“No.”

“You froze the deal.”

“It was never your deal.”

“I can’t pay Westline.”

“You guaranteed money against property you didn’t control.”

“You know why I did it.”

“Because your business was failing.”

“I was trying to save everything.”

Naomi closed her eyes.

“You mean your company.”

“My life.”

“Lily is my life.”

Silence.

Robert whispered:

“I never wanted her hurt.”

Naomi believed him.

That almost made it worse.

He had not wanted Lily hurt.

He had simply been willing to use a confrontation involving her if it solved his problems.

Good intentions were not required for betrayal.

Sometimes cowardice was enough.
