Chapter 9

The trust audit found that the house itself had never been financially distressed.
Diane had repeatedly claimed otherwise.
Maintenance costs were significant, but Mark had funded a residence reserve inside the trust.
There was enough money for ordinary upkeep for more than a decade.
The land did not need to be sold.
That destroyed the family’s “practical necessity” argument.
Then Owen found the Westline side letter.
It was signed by Robert.
Carla.
And Diane.
Not as sellers.
They could not legally sign that.
They signed as:
Family Facilitation Representatives.
The side letter promised they would use “all lawful family and guardianship avenues” to produce a sale recommendation from whoever controlled Lily’s property interests.
In return, Westline would pay them collectively $310,000 in facilitation and consulting fees if the transaction closed.
Naomi stared at the number.
“It was more.”
Owen nodded.
Robert’s disclosed company fee had been only part of it.
Carla’s eighty thousand was only part of it.
Diane herself would receive $110,000 through a charitable consulting entity she controlled.
Maya leaned back.
“So all three had direct financial interests.”
“Yes.”
Still, that did not prove they planned the assault.
Then the court-appointed digital examiner recovered a deleted group chat.
Not all of it.
Enough.
Two days before the barbecue:
Carla:
If Naomi gives us another screaming performance, Diane has what she needs.
Robert:
Keep Lily out of it.
Diane:
The child will be there. That cannot be avoided. Just make Naomi show who she is.
Carla:
Easy.
Naomi read the exchange without speaking.
Maya pointed carefully.
“Robert explicitly told her to keep Lily out.”
Naomi nodded.
“That matters.”
“Yes.”
“Diane didn’t tell Carla to hurt her.”
“Correct.”
“But they planned to provoke me in front of Lily.”
“Yes.”
The group had not initially planned violence against the child.
That was important.
Then another recovered message from the morning of the barbecue appeared.
Carla to Diane:
She’ll move fastest if it’s about Lily. Trust me.
Diane responded:
Do not be reckless. We need evidence, not another disaster.
Maya looked at Naomi.
“This is where intent becomes complicated.”
Naomi stared at the message.
Diane knew Carla planned to involve Lily somehow.
She warned her not to be reckless.
Then she still allowed the setup to continue.
Robert kept recording.
Diane kept guardianship papers ready.
Carla brought a steel skewer into the confrontation.

The final missing piece was what Carla actually intended to do with it.
That answer arrived in Part 10.
