Chapter 7

Maya found the first drafted petition.

It had never been filed.

That mattered.

But it existed.

Diane’s attorney had prepared a preliminary emergency guardianship outline three days before the barbecue.

It contained blanks.

No incident description.

No date.

No finalized allegations.

Just sections ready to be completed if circumstances changed.

One heading read:

Recent violent conduct witnessed in minor child’s presence.

Naomi stared at the words.

“Before the barbecue.”

“Yes.”

“She expected violence.”

“She expected evidence she thought might fit that category.”

“Same thing.”

“Legally, no.”

Naomi walked toward the window.

Maya continued.

“The attorney may simply have drafted contingencies based on what Diane told her.”

“What did Diane tell her?”

“That you had threatened to ‘fight anyone’ who tried to sell the property.”

Naomi remembered saying something similar.

Months earlier.

At Thanksgiving.

After Diane mentioned subdividing the land.

Naomi had said:

“I’ll fight anyone who tries to take Lily’s inheritance.”

Not physical violence.

Legal resistance.

Diane had converted the language into instability.

The pattern was familiar now.

Everyone used technically real pieces.

Naomi’s anger.

Her protective behavior.

Her kick.

The property dispute.

Then they arranged those pieces into a story serving their financial interests.

Carla’s phone records produced another clue.

Twenty minutes before the barbecue confrontation, she texted Robert:

Keep the angle wide. I need her reaction, not Lily.

Robert replied:

Don’t do anything stupid.

Carla:

Relax. I know exactly what gets her moving.

Naomi read the messages twice.

Her hands began shaking.

Maya remained quiet.

Naomi whispered:

“She used Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Dad knew she was provoking me.”

“Yes.”

“He told her not to do anything stupid.”

“Yes.”

“But he kept recording.”

“Yes.”

That was the distinction Robert would have to live with.

He may not have known Carla planned to strike Lily.

But he knew there would be a deliberate provocation.

He participated by preparing to record Naomi’s reaction.

Diane’s role was still less direct.

No message told Carla to hurt the child.

No note instructed Robert to film.

But Diane had the guardianship paperwork.

She had expected a public conflict.

And the second Naomi defended Lily, Diane protected Carla and told Naomi not to “make a scene.”

May you like

The language now sounded less spontaneous.

Maybe the scene itself was what they needed.
