Chapter 26 - The staircase

A year after the gala, Clara was fifteen months old.
Walking badly.
Fast.
Fearless.
She toddled toward the grand staircase.
My entire body stopped.
I reached her before the first step.
Not dramatically.
I picked her up.
She protested.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No!”
“Very compelling.”
Alessandra stood nearby.
Laughing.
The staircase had a new gate.
Elegant.
Strong.
Childproof.
Clara slapped it with both hands.
Angry.
I said:
“This is called a boundary.”
Alessandra raised one eyebrow.
May you like
“Look who discovered them.”
Fair.
