Chapter 21 - Aubrielle asks if money proves love

Aubrielle learned more than I wanted.

Children listen.

One night she asked:

“Did Marietta steal my birthday money?”

“Some family money was used for things for Claire when it should not have been.”

“So she stole from me?”

“Some of the paperwork was dishonest. But Grandma’s program was Grandma’s money. It was not a bank account you owned.”

She frowned.

“Then why bad?”

“Because Marietta lied about what the money was for.”

“Did Claire get more?”

“Sometimes.”

“Does Grandma love her more?”

“No.”

“How know?”

I had no perfect answer.

“Because money is not a measurement for love.”

She looked around her bedroom.

“You bought all this.”

“I also love you.”

“That proves it.”

I laughed.

“No. If we lost every object tomorrow, I would still be your dad.”

She considered.

“Can we not test that?”

Agreed.
