Chapter 2 - The Silent Ballroom

The echo of Leo’s final words hung in the air of the grand ballroom like an unexploded charge. For three agonizing seconds, nobody moved. The towering crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm, golden light across the polished marble, but the atmosphere had transformed from an evening of high-society celebration into a public execution.
Julian stood paralyzed in his navy-blue tuxedo. The luxury wristwatch on his left arm ticked quietly against the suffocating silence of the room. He looked down at his ten-year-old son, searching the boy’s brown eyes for any sign of hesitation, but found only steel.
"Evelyn..." Julian rasped out, his voice barely audible over the low murmurs sweeping through the crowd. He looked past Leo toward his wife. "Evelyn, let’s take this upstairs. This isn't the time or the place."
Evelyn Ferguson did not flinch. Her white blazer dress with black lace sleeves stood out like a beacon against the dark tuxedos of the surrounding board members. Her dark hair remained pristine in its updo, her diamond earrings catching the candlelight as she slowly raised the white legal document in her hand.
"There is no 'upstairs' anymore, Julian," Evelyn said softly, her poise unbroken. "The court received the digital filing ten minutes ago. By tomorrow morning, the freeze on your personal accounts will be finalized."
Chloe let out a faint, strangled gasp. Her manicured hand slipped from Julian’s arm as if his navy suit had suddenly caught fire. She took a frantic step backward, her high heels clicking against the stone, her silk-pink backless gown swaying as she looked at the surrounding faces. The very people who had smiled at her thirty minutes ago—board members, corporate wives, media moguls—were now staring at her with cold, unyielding disdain.
"Julian, do something!" Chloe hissed through her teeth, her voice trembling with rising hysteria. "Tell them it’s a mistake! Tell them she’s lying!"
"Shut up, Chloe," Julian growled under his breath, his eyes never leaving his wife. His light stubble twitched as his jaw clenched violently. The confident, high-status executive who had dominated Wall Street for a decade was crumbling in front of the entire corporate network.
Leo stepped back, returning to his mother’s side. He slid the glowing smartphone back into the pocket of his light-blue suit, his youthful face calm, though his small chest rose and fell with heavy, adrenaline-fueled breaths.
Evelyn placed her hand over Leo’s shoulder, turning her slender frame away from Julian. "Come, Leo. Our driver is waiting."
"Evelyn, wait!" Julian took a sudden, aggressive step forward, reaching out a broad hand to grab her arm.
Before his fingers could touch the black lace of her sleeve, two burly men in dark security suits stepped out from the crowd, blocking Julian’s path with stone-faced efficiency. The badge on their lapels read Vanguard Private Security—a firm owned entirely by Evelyn’s family estate.
"Step back, Mr. Vance," the lead security officer said calmly.
Julian stopped cold. He watched his wife and son walk smoothly through the path cleared by the stunned guests. The heavy oak double doors of the ballroom opened, allowing the crisp night air to sweep into the room before clicking shut behind Evelyn and Leo.
Julian stood alone in the center of the marble floor. Beside him, Chloe was weeping silently, her slim shoulders shaking as she clutched her delicate bracelet.
Suddenly, Julian’s private phone vibrated in his inner tuxedo pocket.
He pulled out the device with a trembling hand. The screen displayed an incoming text from an untraceable number:

Julian’s breath locked in his chest. He looked up at the whispering crowd, realizing with sickening clarity that the confrontation in the ballroom wasn't just a bitter divorce—it was the first strike in an international corporate execution.
