Chapter 3 - The Digital Paper Trail

Three miles away, inside the penthouse of the Grand Regency Tower, the rain tapped steadily against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city skyline.
Evelyn sat on the plush velvet sofa, holding a warm porcelain cup of tea. Her white blazer dress was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing a subtle, elegant silver necklace. Sitting beside her on the rug was Leo. The young boy had removed his light-blue jacket and matching bow tie, sitting in his crisp white shirt as he opened a tablet computer resting on his lap.
"You were very brave tonight, Leo," Evelyn murmured gently, setting her teacup on the marble coffee table.
Leo looked up, his short brown hair falling slightly over his forehead. "Was I right to do it, Mom? At the party?"
"You spoke the truth," Evelyn said, her voice filled with quiet warmth as she touched his cheek. "And the truth is the only weapon that works against men like your father."
Leo looked back down at the tablet screen. The display was filled with thousands of organized files, green spreadsheets, and timestamped audio recordings.
The paper trail hadn't started with a private investigator. It had started three months ago right here in this apartment.
Leo had been using his father’s old iPad for his middle school coding class when an automatic cloud sync error popped up. A hidden folder titled Project Vanguard had appeared on the screen, locked behind a four-digit passcode. Leo, observant and sharp beyond his years, tried the date of his mother’s wedding anniversary—October 14th.
The folder unlocked instantly.
Inside weren't corporate contracts or stock reports. They were private flight itineraries to Zurich, hotel receipts from luxury resorts in St. Moritz, and hundreds of high-resolution photographs of Chloe wearing custom designer jewelry—all billed to an offshore holding company named Apex Holdings.
When Leo showed the files to his mother three weeks ago, Evelyn hadn't screamed. She hadn't cried. She had sat at her vanity table, carefully applying her lip gloss, and said four words that changed everything: Let him build his gallows.
"Mom?" Leo asked, breaking the silence of the penthouse.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Why did Dad give Chloe your dress?"
Evelyn’s gaze drifted toward the dark window, her dark eyes reflecting the city lights below. A cold, bitter smile touched her lips.
"That dress wasn't just a dress, Leo," Evelyn whispered. "Five years ago, on our tenth anniversary, your father gave me a custom silk-pink gown designed by a private house in Milan. It was the night he signed the master deed to Apex Global—the company my father built."
She turned back to her son, her dark eyes gleaming with razor-sharp intensity.
"When Julian started giving Chloe my clothes, my jewelry, and my private accounts, he wasn't just having an affair," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a low, chilling whisper. "He was trying to erase me from his life so Chloe could take my seat on the board."
Suddenly, Leo’s tablet chimed with a sharp notification sound.
A red warning box flashed across the screen:
WARNING: EXPORT DETECTED FROM APEX GLOBAL MASTER SERVER. 14,000 ENCRYPTED FILES TRANSFERRED TO UNKNOWN IP.
Leo looked up at his mother, his youthful face tight with confusion. "Mom... I didn't press export."
Evelyn stood up from the sofa, her posture instantly going rigid. "Who is the IP address registered to?"

Leo typed rapidly on the screen, his fingers moving across the glass. The location pinged three seconds later.
"It’s not an offshore account, Mom," Leo whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "The files were downloaded from inside Dad’s private study ten minutes ago."
