Chapter 4 - The Shattered Empire

The rain fell in heavy sheets over the downtown financial district as morning broke over the city. By 8:00 AM, Wall Street was in a state of absolute chaos.

The financial news networks were broadcasting live from outside the headquarters of Apex Global. The ticker at the bottom of the television screen showed Apex stock dropping by fourteen percent in pre-market trading—the largest single-day collapse in the company's twenty-year history.

Inside the high-rise penthouse condo overlooking the harbor, Julian stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror. He was still wearing his navy-blue tuxedo trousers, but his crisp white shirt was unbuttoned, his dark tie hanging loosely around his neck. His light stubble was dark against his pale, exhausted face.

On the glass coffee table sat three empty glasses of whiskey and an encrypted satellite phone that hadn't stopped ringing for four hours.

"Julian, please talk to me!" Chloe sobbed from the bedroom doorway.

She was wearing a silk robe, her blonde hair messy, her eyes red and swollen from hours of crying. The glamour of the silk-pink backless dress was gone, replaced by pure, naked panic.

"My phone has been ringing non-stop!" Chloe wept, holding up her phone. "My modeling agency dropped me twenty minutes ago! My manager said I’m blacklisted from every event in New York! You told me she wouldn't find out!"

Julian turned around slowly, his piercing blue-gray eyes cold enough to freeze water. He took three deliberate steps toward her, his broad shoulders casting a heavy shadow over the living room.

"You wore the pink dress," Julian said, his gravelly voice dropping into a low, terrifying rumble.

Chloe blinked, wiping a tear from her cheek. "What?"

"I told you to wear the blue satin gown I bought you last week," Julian said, his jaw tightening until his light stubble stood out sharply. "Who gave you the pink silk dress, Chloe?"

Chloe backed against the doorframe, her hands trembling violently. "I... I found it in the garment bag delivered to my suite yesterday afternoon! It had a note signed with your initials! It said 'Wear this tonight if you want the board to respect you!'"

Julian froze. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped beast.

"I didn't send that dress," Julian whispered, his face turning ghostly pale.

"What do you mean you didn't send it?!" Chloe shrieked, her voice cracking. "It came from the Milan boutique! It had your personal corporate account card attached to the box!"

Julian grabbed his satellite phone from the table, opening his private transaction log. He scrolled frantically through his encrypted ledger.

There it was—a charge for eighty-five thousand dollars cleared twenty-four hours ago from his private account. But the IP authorization hadn't come from his phone or his laptop.

It had been authorized from a terminal inside the Apex Global boardroom.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The realization crashed over him like a tidal wave.

Evelyn hadn't just discovered the affair through Leo’s phone. Someone inside his own executive board had been feeding Evelyn information, guiding his mistress, and setting up the exact visual trap that destroyed his public reputation at the gala.

Suddenly, the heavy front door of the penthouse clicked open.

Two men dressed in dark suits stepped into the foyer. Leading them was Arthur Vance—Julian’s senior legal advisor and long-time corporate attorney.

"Julian," Arthur said flatly, pulling a thick Manila folder from his leather briefcase. "We have a massive problem."

Julian stepped away from Chloe, adjusting his shirt collar. "Did you stay the freeze order on my personal accounts?"

"Forget the freeze order, Julian," Arthur said, his eyes filled with grave concern. "The board of directors just called an emergency meeting for 10:00 AM. And Evelyn didn't just file for divorce."

Arthur opened the folder, pulling out a certified federal subpoena stamped with the seal of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"She turned over the master ledger for Apex Global," Arthur whispered. "They’re charging you with three hundred million dollars of offshore wire fraud."
