Chapter 6 - The Whispering Boardroom

At 9:55 AM, the executive elevator at Apex Global headquarters opened onto the top-floor boardroom suite.
Julian stepped out into the carpeted hallway, flanked by two armed private security guards. His charcoal suit was immaculate, his short dark hair brushed back, his posture rigid and commanding despite the public destruction of his personal life twelve hours earlier.
The glass walls of the executive lounge were lined with corporate employees, junior analysts, and department heads. As Julian walked past, the quiet conversations died instantly. Eyes darted away; executives whispered behind tablet screens.
Julian pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of the master boardroom.
The long oval table was surrounded by twelve senior board members—men and women who controlled billions in international capital. Sitting at the far end of the table, flanked by two federal attorneys, was Evelyn Ferguson.
She wore a sleek dark navy skirt suit, her dark hair pinned into a low, elegant chignon. Standing beside her chair, wearing his light-blue formal suit and matching bow tie, was ten-year-old Leo.
Julian walked to the head of the table, pulling out the broad leather executive chair that had been his throne for ten years.
"This meeting is out of order," Julian announced, his gravelly voice filling the cavernous room with cold authority. "Under Section Four of the corporate charter, an emergency board session requires forty-eight hours' written notice signed by the CEO."
Evelyn set her gold fountain pen flat on the table. She looked up at her husband, her dark eyes calm, steady, and unyielding.
"Section Four applies to active executives, Julian," Evelyn said smoothly. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, the Securities and Exchange Commission issued a temporary suspension of your corporate voting rights pending the outcome of the wire fraud investigation."
"The wire fraud charges are based on fabricated server logs!" Julian spat, leaning his broad hands flat against the mahogany table. "Marcus Vance planted those files on my personal terminal!"
A soft, polite knock sounded at the side entrance of the boardroom.
Marcus Vance stepped into the room. Dressed in a dark grey suit, he walked over to Evelyn's side, placing a thick leather-bound binder on the table before her.
"The server logs aren't fabricated, Julian," Marcus said quietly, looking his former boss in the eye. "Every wire transfer from Apex Global to Apex Holdings was authorized using your private biometric key. I spent three years documenting every dollar you moved into Chloe’s offshore accounts."
Julian’s jaw clenched until his light stubble twitched violently. His fists tightened against the wood. "You traitorous bastard. My father gave your family everything."
"Your father took my father’s shares during the 1998 restructuring, Julian," Marcus replied flatly. "We’re just returning the estate to its rightful owners."
Evelyn stood up from her chair. She smoothed down her navy jacket, her diamond earrings sparkling under the fluorescent ceiling lights.
"The board has already voted, Julian," Evelyn said softly. "By unanimous consent of eighty-two percent of voting shares, your position as Chief Executive Officer of Apex Global is hereby terminated."
She reached down, taking Leo’s hand into hers.
"You have two hours to clear your personal items from the corner office," Evelyn added, her voice dropping into a cold whisper. "And my security detail will escort you from the building."

Julian stood alone at the head of the long table as twelve board members quietly stood up, picked up their folders, and walked toward the exit without making eye contact.
Only Leo remained at the door for a brief second. The young boy looked back at his father, his sensitive face filled with a complex mix of sadness and absolute resolve, before turning away to follow his mother into the executive corridor.
