Chapter 8 - The Hidden Ledger

Night fell over the city in a cold, howling wind that rattled the high-rise windows of the Grand Regency Tower.

Inside the quiet penthouse, ten-year-old Leo sat on the floor of his bedroom, his light-blue formal suit replaced by a simple grey hoodie and jeans. His tablet lay flat on the carpet before him, illuminated by the green glow of an active decryption program.

The bedroom door opened softly, and Evelyn stepped inside. She had removed her navy blazer, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater, her dark hair falling softly over her shoulders.

"You should be asleep, Leo," Evelyn whispered gently, sitting beside him on the rug.

"I’m almost done, Mom," Leo said, his eyes fixed on the screen. "There’s one file that didn't export to the SEC folder."

Evelyn’s brow furrowed slightly. "Which file?"

Leo pointed his small finger at a dark red icon at the bottom of the directory. The file was titled Evelyn_1998.dat.

"Dad hid this file inside the system bios three years ago," Leo explained softly. "It wasn't stored on the corporate server or the cloud. It was locked inside his personal luxury watch."

Evelyn froze. Her dark eyes locked onto the glowing red icon on the screen.

Julian’s luxury watch—the gold-and-sapphire timepiece he wore every single day, the watch he had worn at the gala last night—contained a physical micro-drive embedded beneath the casing.

"Can you open it?" Evelyn asked, her voice dropping into a tense whisper.

Leo tapped three commands into the terminal window. The green bar reached one hundred percent, and the red icon popped open into a single black-and-white PDF document.

It was an official coroner's report from October 12, 1998—the exact night Evelyn’s father, Arthur Ferguson, had died in a sudden single-vehicle accident on the coastal highway.

Evelyn’s breath caught violently in her throat. She pulled the tablet closer to her eyes, her hands trembling as she read the microscopic text written by the state forensic examiner twenty-eight years ago.

The report did not say her father died of blunt force trauma from the crash.

The forensic toxicology analysis showed lethal levels of a rare, synthetic cardiac toxin in his bloodstream—a toxin manufactured exclusively by a pharmaceutical firm controlled by Julian’s father.

Evelyn sat motionless on the carpet, tears welling in her dark eyes as twenty-eight years of hidden history crashed down upon her heart.

Julian’s family hadn't just acquired Apex Global through hostile buyouts and financial leverage. They had murdered her father to take control of the founding shares.

Leo looked up at his mother, his sensitive face filled with deep, emotional understanding. He reached out his small hand, placing his fingers over hers on the glass screen.

"Did you know, Mom?" Leo whispered softly.

Evelyn slowly shook her head, a single tear slipping down her fair cheek. "I suspected, Leo. But I never had the proof."

She looked into her son’s brown eyes, her posture returning to that of an unyielding, invincible matriarch.

"Now we have everything," Evelyn whispered.
