Chapter 5 - The Gift from a Stranger

The rain continued to hammer against the glass windows of the senior partner suite at Vance & Associates, sixty floors above Wall Street.

Julian sat in a high-backed leather armchair, his dark navy tuxedo replaced by a sharp charcoal suit. His broad frame was tense, his hands clasped tightly between his knees as he stared at the federal subpoena resting on the glass table before him.

Across the table sat Arthur Vance, flipping through forty pages of bank statements printed on high-grade security paper.

"This doesn't make sense, Arthur," Julian said, his voice deep, gravelly, and tight with suppressed rage. "The offshore wire transfers to Apex Holdings were double-encrypted through our Zurich server. Only three people had the master decryption key: me, you, and my CFO, Marcus Vance."

Arthur stopped flipping pages. He looked up through his gold-rimmed glasses, his expression grim. "Marcus is my brother, Julian. He wouldn't leak those files."

"Then how did Evelyn get her hands on the transaction hashes?!" Julian slammed his broad fist onto the leather armrest, making the water glasses rattle. "My ten-year-old son held up a phone last night containing exact server timestamps from six months ago! A ten-year-old boy doesn't crack Zurich encryption protocols, Arthur!"

Arthur set his pen down, leaning back in his chair. "He didn't have to crack them, Julian. Someone downloaded the files from your private desktop inside the estate and placed them directly onto Leo’s cloud drive."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into razor-sharp slits. "Who?"

"Ask yourself who had access to your private study during the gala prep," Arthur said quietly.

Julian’s mind raced back to forty-eight hours ago. The estate had been filled with caterers, florists, and security personnel. But only one person had been granted private clearance to enter his study without a security escort: Chloe.

Julian stood up from his chair, his broad frame towering over the desk. "She told me the pink dress was delivered to her suite by a courier."

"And did you verify the courier?" Arthur asked.

Julian pulled his phone, dialing his private security chief. "Find the delivery log for the Grand Regency suite yesterday at 2:00 PM. I want the driver's name, the license plate, and the security footage from the lobby."

Three minutes later, Julian’s phone chimed with an encrypted video file.

Julian opened the video on his screen. The security footage showed a tall man in a dark rain coat stepping out of a silver sedan outside Chloe’s luxury building. The man carried a large, black garment bag bearing the private emblem of the Milanese fashion house.

As the man turned toward the building entrance, his hat shifted slightly under the lobby lights, revealing his face for two seconds.

Julian’s heart stopped.

The man delivering the pink silk dress to Chloe wasn't a courier.

It was Marcus Vance—Julian’s CFO and Arthur’s younger brother.

Julian slowly raised his dark eyes to meet Arthur’s gaze across the table. The silence in the legal office turned ice-cold.

"Your brother delivered the dress, Arthur," Julian whispered, his gravelly voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register.

Arthur didn't flinch. He didn't look surprised. He slowly reached down, closed his leather briefcase, and stood up from his chair.

"I know, Julian," Arthur said softly. "Because Marcus didn't work for you. He worked for Evelyn’s father twenty years ago. You took this company from the Ferguson family through hostile buyouts, Julian. Did you really think Evelyn married you because she loved you?"

Julian stood frozen in the center of the office as Arthur picked up his briefcase and walked calmly toward the double doors.

"The board meeting is in thirty minutes, Julian," Arthur said without turning back. "I suggest you prepare your resignation."
