Chapter 7 - The Shadowy Benefactor

By 2:00 PM, a heavy rainstorm lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the corner office on the top floor of Apex Global.
The broad oak desk was empty. The crystal award plaques had been packed into three cardboard boxes sitting on the leather sofa. Julian stood by the window, holding a glass of amber scotch, staring down at the grey city skyline sixty floors below.
His phone buzzed on the windowsill.
Julian picked it up. It was a private, encrypted call from an unlisted number in Zurich.
Julian pressed the receiver to his ear. "Speak."
A low, smooth male voice with a faint European accent spoke through the speaker: "Mr. Vance. I trust your transition out of the corner office is going smoothly?"
Julian’s eyes narrowed into razor slits. "Who is this?"
"A friend who appreciates ironies," the voice replied calmly. "You thought Evelyn was the architect of your destruction, Julian. You thought Marcus Vance was the mastermind. But did you really think a grieving housewife and a mid-level accountant could execute a multi-billion-dollar corporate seizure in three months?"
Julian’s heart hammered against his chest. He took a slow sip of scotch, his knuckles turning white around the glass. "What are you talking about?"
"Look at the signature on page forty-two of the federal subpoena," the voice whispered softly. "Look at who provided the initial seed capital for Apex Holdings six years ago."
The line went dead with a sharp, static click.
Julian dropped his scotch glass onto the desk. He rushed over to the cardboard box on the sofa, pulling out the thick Manila folder Arthur Vance had handed him earlier that morning.
He flipped frantically through forty pages of legal filings until he reached page forty-two.
There, stamped beneath the red seal of the Securities and Exchange Commission, was the original corporate registration for Apex Holdings—the offshore shell company used to funnel millions into Chloe’s private accounts.
Julian’s eyes scanned down to the bottom line of the founding document.
The initial seed capital of five million dollars hadn't come from Julian’s personal accounts. It hadn't come from Marcus Vance or Evelyn’s family estate.
The wire transfer had been authorized by a private international trust fund named The Sterling Group—registered in Geneva, Switzerland.
And the sole trustee of The Sterling Group was Chloe’s biological father—a man Julian had believed died fifteen years ago in an aviation accident in Europe.
Julian dropped the page onto the leather sofa. His breathing became ragged as the sheer, horrifying magnitude of the trap revealed itself.
Chloe hadn't been a naive, glamour-obsessed twenty-eight-year-old model who stumbled into his life at a charity gala eighteen months ago.

She was a surgically placed operative sent by the very international syndicate Julian had tried to bankrupt during the 2020 European expansion.
And Evelyn hadn't just discovered the affair—she had partnered with Chloe’s handlers to ensure Julian’s complete and permanent annihilation.
