Chapter 10 - The Threshold of Truth

Six months later, the spring sun warmed the grand back terrace of the Rossi estate. Blooming cherry blossom trees framed the lush green lawn overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan.

Eight-year-old Matteo was running happily across the grass with a young golden retriever puppy, his legs fully recovered, his laughter ringing clear across the grounds.

Sitting at a white wrought-iron table on the terrace was Clara. She wore a beautiful floral spring dress, her long dark-brown hair falling softly over her shoulders, her rosy skin glowing with health and radiant happiness.

Vincent walked out onto the terrace carrying two glasses of fresh lemonade. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with rolled sleeves and dark trousers. He set the glasses down, sat beside Clara, and gently wrapped his broad arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side.

Clara leaned her head against his broad, warm chest, looking up into his piercing gray-blue eyes. "What are you thinking about, Vincent?"

"I'm thinking about the day you walked into this house," Vincent said softly, kissing her temple. "I thought my life was over. You gave me my son, and you gave me a reason to live."

Matteo came running up the terrace steps, holding the puppy in his arms, his dark eyes shining with joy. "Dad! Clara! Look how fast Max can run!"

Vincent laughed warmly, pulling his son into his lap, kissing his cheek as Clara wrapped her arms around both of them in a warm, unbroken family embrace.

The nightmare was over. Peace had finally returned to the Rossi family.

Suddenly, Dominic walked quietly out onto the terrace, holding an unsealed black leather envelope bearing an official international wax seal.

"Sorry to disturb the afternoon, Boss," Dominic said, his tone unusually serious. "This was just delivered to the front gate by an untraceable diplomatic courier from London."

Vincent’s smile faded slightly. He accepted the heavy leather envelope, broke the dark wax seal, and pulled out a single sheet of aged parchment paper.

Inside the envelope was an old, black-and-white photograph dated ten years ago.

The photograph showed Clara’s late father—a man who was supposed to have been a simple accountant—standing beside Vincent’s late father, Don Vito Rossi, in front of an ancient stone vault in Rome.

Attached to the photograph was a short, handwritten note in dark silver ink:

Vincent Rossi and Clara Hayes,

You have defeated Julian and secured your son's future in Chicago.

But Clara’s father did not die of natural causes ten years ago. He was the chief vault keeper for the Sovereign Council in Europe—and he hid the master bloodline key inside Clara’s childhood home.

The second chapter of your story has just begun.

The Sovereign Council.

Vincent stared down at the photograph and the silver ink as an electric, dangerous resolve settled over his powerful frame. He looked up, meeting Clara’s wide, shocked dark-brown eyes.

There was no fear in Vincent’s gray-blue eyes—only the unyielding, fierce protection of a man who would burn the world to protect his wife and son.

Vincent folded the parchment slowly, slipping it into his jacket pocket, and reached out to hold Clara’s hand tightly into his own.

A slow, fierce smile touched Vincent’s lips as he looked toward the horizon.

"Prep the private jet for Rome, Dominic," Vincent commanded in a low, lethal baritone. "Our journey is just getting started."
