Chapter 13 - Whispers in the Catacombs

The air in the room suddenly turned freezing cold.
Clara stood paralyzed, staring at the fresh ink on the desk. Yesterday. While she had been holding Leo on the sunlit terrace of Vincent’s suburban estate in Lake Forest, her father—the man she had grieved for a decade, the man whose headstone she had placed white carnations upon every Mother’s Day—had been sitting in this exact chair, breathing the Roman night air, dipping an ink pen into a glass well.
"He’s alive," Clara gasped, the room tilting violently around her. Her knees buckled, but Vincent’s arm was instantly around her waist, supporting her full weight, holding her against his solid chest.
"Easy, Clara. Breathe," Vincent commanded, his voice a steady lifeline in the storm tearing through her mind. "Keep your feet on the ground."
"How could he do this?" Clara cried, the agony of ten years of mourning crashing over her like a tidal wave of betrayal and confusion. "I watched them lower a casket into the ground! I sorted through his clothes, Vincent! I gave his sweaters to charity! I wept until my eyes bled every single anniversary of his death! How could he let me suffer like that?!"
Leo walked up to her, his small face etched with deep, sorrowful empathy. He reached out and gently laid his palm against Clara’s cheek, wiping away a hot tear with his thumb.
Vincent didn't offer empty platitudes. He reached across the desk, carefully picking up the envelope using the edge of a clean tactical knife to avoid contaminating any prints. He slid the blade under the wax seal, unfolding the thick sheet of parchment.
"Read it, Vincent," Clara whispered, clutching Leo’s small hand against her hip. "Please. I can't."
Vincent turned the paper toward the amber beam of his tactical light and began to read aloud, his deep baritone echoing off the ancient bookshelves:
*"My dearest Clara,*
*If you are reading this, it means the fail-safe has triggered. It means Julian has fallen, Vincent has claimed his rightful place beside you, and the Sovereign Council has turned its venom toward the only thing that ever mattered to me: you.*
*I know the rage and hatred burning in your heart right now. You believe your father abandoned you to a life of grief. You believe I chose shadows over my own flesh and blood. Every breath I took without you in that small Chicago kitchen was an agonizing death, Clara. But ten years ago, the Council discovered that I possessed the master cipher for the Sovereign Vault. They dispatched their cleaners to our home.*
*I had two choices: die beside you and leave you completely unprotected when they ransacked our house, or fake my death, draw their hounds away from Chicago, and disappear into the Roman subterranean archives to dismantle their empire from within.*
*I gave you a peaceful decade, my brave girl. But now, the clock has run out.*
*Don Vito Rossi and I made a blood covenant thirty years ago. The Sovereign Vault does not contain gold. It contains the Genesis Protocol—the original blackmail files and financial leverage that created every war in the twentieth century. If the Council reclaims it, Europe will burn. If Vincent claims it, the Rossi name will break the Council’s spine forever.*
*The vault is beneath the Basilica of Saint Clement. Enter through the fourth-century Mithraic temple via the underground spring.*
*Do not trust anyone who wears the signet of the silver phoenix.*
*I am waiting for you where the living water meets the dark.*
*Your loving father,*
*Arthur."*
Silence descended over the study. The words hung in the air like an electric charge.
"The Basilica of Saint Clement," Dominic murmured from the doorway, his weapon raised, his eyes darting toward the winding staircase. "San Clemente. It’s one of the oldest basilicas in Rome. Built in three layers. The twelfth-century church sits on top of a fourth-century basilica, which sits on top of a first-century Roman house and a pagan temple dedicated to Mithras. An underground river runs right through the lowest level."
"He knew the topography better than anyone," Clara said, her voice shaking as she stared at the letter. "When I was twelve, he bought me a cross-section blueprint of Rome’s subterranean architecture. He told me the real history of the world wasn't written under the sun—it was buried where kings couldn't reach it."
Suddenly, the floorboards vibrated beneath their boots.
It wasn't an earthquake. It was the synchronized, muffled thud of high-caliber suppressed gunfire echoing from the narrow street below.
Dominic’s tactical earpiece erupted with static and shouting. *"Contact! Multiple bogeys converging from the north and west alleys! They’re wearing tactical gear and night vision! They're not local cops—they're Sovereign Council strike units!"*
"Mateo! Fall back to the secondary extraction point!" Dominic barked into his mic.
Vincent reacted in a millisecond. He swept Leo into his left arm, grabbed Clara’s hand with his right, and shoved her toward the back of the study. "Dominic, blow the stairwell! Buy us three minutes!"
"On it, Boss!" Dominic pulled a fragmentation grenade from his tactical vest, pulled the pin, and kicked an antique oak bookcase across the stairwell door before rolling the grenade down the spiral steps.
*BOOM!*
The explosion shook the eighteenth-century palazzo to its foundation. Plaster rained down from the ceiling, choking the air with white dust. Screams and gunfire erupted below as the staircase collapsed into an impassable chasm of shattered masonry and splintered timber.
"Where do we go?!" Clara yelled, coughing through the plaster dust, clutching Leo’s small leg as Vincent held him tight. "We’re trapped on the fourth floor!"
Vincent pointed his tactical light toward the far corner of the room. Behind a sliding panel in the mahogany wainscoting, an ancient iron service winch sat beside a narrow vertical shaft carved directly through the ancient brick chimney.
"Arthur Hayes never built an office without an escape route," Vincent said, pulling back the rusted iron grating. "Dominic! Rig the zip lines!"
Within twenty seconds, Dominic had anchored high-tensile climbing cables to the structural iron beams of the fireplace.
Below them, through the floorboards, the sounds of boots climbing over the rubble reached their ears. A voice shouted in accented Italian and fluent, cold English: *"Kill the Rossi heir! Secure the woman alive! The Council wants her blood for the biometric vault!"*
"Clara," Vincent said, his eyes locking onto hers amidst the falling debris. His face was smeared with gray dust, but his expression was pure, unbreakable diamond. "You clip onto me. Wrap your legs around my waist, keep Leo between our chests. Do not look down. Do not let go. Do you trust me?"
"With my life," Clara said fiercely, throwing her arms around his neck, pressing Leo securely between their chests.
Vincent clicked the heavy steel carabiner onto his tactical harness, locked Clara and Leo against him, and gripped the descent brake.
"Dominic, cover the rear!" Vincent ordered.
"Right behind you, Boss!"
Vincent stepped off the ledge into the pitch-black void of the chimney shaft.
They plunged through the darkness of ancient Rome, wind rushing past their ears, the terrifying descent arrested only by the screeching friction of Vincent’s gloved hand on the steel cable. They descended through centuries of forgotten masonry, breaking through the basement ceiling, dropping straight into the muddy, echoing darkness of an ancient Roman drainage aqueduct.
Vincent hit the wet ground with a heavy roll, taking the brunt of the impact on his broad shoulders, shielding Clara and Leo perfectly in the mud.
Clara gasped for air, spitting out grit, looking around in astonishment.
They were standing in an ancient vaulted tunnel of red Roman brick. Inches from their boots, clear, icy water rushed through a stone channel, whispering through the dark toward the subterranean heart of the Eternal City.
Above them, muffled explosions and gunfire tore through the palazzo they had just abandoned.

"We have to move," Vincent said, pulling Clara to her feet, his eyes scanning the pitch-black tunnel. "The catacombs lead directly beneath the Colosseum toward the Basilica of Saint Clement. Arthur is waiting. And tonight, the Sovereign Council learns what happens when they hunt my family."
