Chapter 20 - The Sovereign Awakening

The descent through the alpine blizzard was a blur of howling wind, stinging ice, and jagged granite cliffs rushing upward in the dark.

Vincent hit the snow-covered battlements of the northern ridge with a heavy, controlled roll, instantly unhooking his harness and raising his suppressed assault rifle. Three seconds later, Clara, Dominic, Arthur, and Elena landed beside him, securing Leo within the protective pocket of the stone parapet.

Below them, the medieval fortress of Castello di Sangue loomed like a black dragon carved out of the mountain peak. Searchlights swept across the snowdrifts, and automated perimeter turrets hummed with deadly hydraulic precision.

"Dominic, take out the perimeter radar dome," Vincent ordered through his tactical throat mic. "Arthur, breach the funicular entrance. We move as one unit. Lethal force authorized on all hostiles."

Within sixty seconds, Dominic’s high-caliber thermal rifle fired three subsonic rounds. The primary surveillance dish and two automated searchlights exploded into showers of blue sparks.

The assault was lightning-fast, brutal, and coordinated with terrifying perfection.

Vincent led the charge through the rusted iron doors of the old funicular railway, clearing the corridors with merciless speed. Mercenaries who turned corners with weapons raised were dropped before their fingers could find their triggers. Arthur Hayes fought beside his future son-in-law like a man possessed, his suppressed pistol barking in rhythm with Vincent’s rifle, clearing twenty years of Council filth from the stone corridors.

They ascended through the ancient keep, leaving a trail of shattered doors, eliminated security teams, and disabled defense grids.

Ten minutes after touchdown, they reached the grand bronze doors of the Inner Sanctum.

The doors were already unlatched.

Vincent pushed the heavy bronze panels open with his boot, stepping into a cavernous, octagonal hall lit by towering candelabras and modern floor-mounted uplights. The floor was polished black marble reflecting the soaring Gothic arches above.

At the far end of the hall stood the ultimate prize: the Inner Sovereign Vault—a massive sphere of glowing crystalline alloy set into the solid bedrock of the mountain peak.

And standing directly beneath the glowing sphere, dressed in an immaculate white silk pantsuit with a cape of dark sable fur, stood Victoria Rossi.

Surrounding her were four towering praetorian operatives armed with customized submachine guns, their weapons trained on the entrance.

Victoria did not look alarmed. She stood with her hands clasped loosely in front of her, watching Vincent enter with the proud, calculating gaze of a queen welcoming an errant prince.

"Right on time, Vincent," Victoria’s voice echoed musical and pure through the vaulted sanctuary. "And you brought the entire family. How delightfully sentimental."

"Step away from the console, Victoria," Vincent said, walking slowly down the central aisle, his rifle lowered but ready to snap upward in a millisecond. Clara walked beside him, Leo holding her hand, while Arthur and Dominic fanned out to cover the flanking columns.

"Victoria?" The woman laughed softly, a sound like clinking crystal. "Have you forgotten how to call me mother, Vincent? After all the sacrifices I made to ensure your survival?"

"You didn't sacrifice anything for me," Vincent spat, his voice dropping into a lethal growl. "You abandoned me. You murdered my father. You hired Julian to slaughter my child and the woman I love."

Victoria’s gray-blue eyes flickered toward Clara, then settled on Leo. A cold, chilling light danced in her gaze.

"Julian was a crude instrument," Victoria admitted smoothly, waving a dismissive hand. "A violent dog meant to push you out of Chicago. Don Vito had made you soft, Vincent. He turned you into an American suburbanite, managing real estate portfolios and playing golf with politicians! You were born to rule Europe! You were born to sit on the Sovereign Council!"

"I would rather burn this castle to the ground with you inside it," Vincent said.

"You can't burn it," Victoria smiled, stepping closer to the crystalline sphere. "Because the moment you step onto the biometric dais with Clara, the Genesis Protocol unlocks the ultimate truth. The truth that Don Vito and Arthur Hayes hid from you for thirty years."

Arthur Hayes stepped forward, his weapon raised, his single eye blazing with fury. "Don't listen to her, Vincent! She's spinning poison!"

"Am I, Arthur?" Victoria turned her icy smile onto Clara’s father. "Why don't you tell Vincent the real reason Don Vito brought you into the fold thirty years ago? Why don't you tell Clara who her mother really was?"

Clara stopped in her tracks. The ground seemed to drop beneath her boots. "What are you talking about?"

Victoria walked toward the center of the marble floor, stopping just outside the range of Vincent’s rifle.

"Your mother was not an innocent accountant’s wife in Chicago, Clara," Victoria said, her words dropping like venomous drops of acid into the frozen air. "Your mother was Sofia Rossi—Don Vito’s first wife. My older sister."

A collective gasp choked the breath from the room.

Clara’s vision blurred. The world tilted violently on its axis.

Vincent froze, his weapon dipping by half an inch as his mind struggled to process the horrific, impossible revelation.

"No..." Clara whispered, shaking her head violently, looking at Arthur. "Dad... tell me she's lying. Tell me she's lying!"

Arthur’s face was ashen, his hands trembling so violently that the slide of his pistol rattled against the frame. He couldn't speak. The silence stretching from Arthur Hayes was an admission that tore Clara’s soul into ribbons.

"You and Vincent are not bound merely by an ancient treaty, my dear," Victoria whispered, her smile widening into a triumphant, demonic grin. "You were bred for this vault. Your marriage, your meeting, your entire life in Chicago—every single breath you took was orchestrated by the Sovereign Council before you were even born! You are the blood of the Rossi! And the key to this vault..."

Suddenly, Leo let out a piercing scream.

The crystalline sphere behind Victoria began to hum with a deafening, terrifying vibration that shook the entire mountain peak!

Red emergency lights violently strobed across the black marble!

A synthetic automated voice echoed from the ceiling in three languages:

*"MASTER BLOODLINE DETECTED. BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE ACTIVATED. INITIATING PROTOCOL OMEGA. TEN SECONDS TO CORE DETONATION."*

Victoria’s triumphant smile instantly vanished, replaced by sheer, unadulterated terror as she spun toward the vault console. "What?! Who authorized Omega?!"

From the shadows behind the crystalline vault, a figure stepped into the flashing red light.

A man thought dead. A man whose body had never been recovered from the burning wreckage of the Chicago safe house.

Julian.

His face was horribly scarred from the explosion, half of his flesh replaced by grotesque synthetic skin, his eyes burning with pure, apocalyptic insanity. In his hand, he held a blinking military-grade remote detonator wired directly into the castle’s core foundation.

"Hello, Vincent," Julian rasped, his voice a ruined, metallic hiss. "If I can't have the throne... nobody leaves this mountain alive."

Julian slammed his thumb down on the switch!

The bedrock beneath their boots cracked wide open with a catastrophic roar as an explosion tore through the foundation, plunging the entire sanctum into a free-fall toward the abyss below!
