Chapter 5 - The Voice in the Static

By midnight, the storm outside had turned into a torrential downpour, lightning flashing across the Chicago skyline.

Inside the mansion’s secure private laboratory—a high-tech facility hidden behind the library bookshelf—Vincent, Clara, and Dominic stood around a central silver workstation.

A specialized micro-soldering technician, retained exclusively by the Rossi family, worked under a high-powered microscope. Using microscopic tools, the technician carefully bypassed the cracked casing of the memory card, connecting fine copper wires directly to the internal silicon chip.

"Initiating data bypass," the technician announced softly, pressing a key on the terminal.

The main monitor flickered to life. A progress bar appeared on the screen, reading: RECOVERING ENCRYPTED AUDIO FILE... 45%... 78%... 100%.

"Data recovered, Mr. Rossi," the technician said, stepping back. "Playing file."

A soft static filled the room, followed by the sound of rain—the sound of rain from fourteen months ago.

Then, a woman’s voice filled the room.

Vincent stopped breathing. It was Elena’s voice—his late wife.

"Vincent... if you are listening to this recording, it means I didn't survive the drive home," Elena’s voice echoed through the speakers, steady despite her trembling breath. "I discovered what Julian has been doing. He hasn't just been embezzling from the family shipping contracts... he built a secondary syndicate behind your back."

Vincent’s hands clenched into tight fists at his sides, his tattoos stark against his pale skin.

"Julian discovered that I found his private ledgers," Elena’s recorded voice continued, static crackling over the line. "He tampered with the brake line and the secondary sensor under my car today. But he doesn't know I recorded his full conversation with his buyer in Europe. The buyer isn't a rival family, Vincent... the buyer is—"

Suddenly, a sharp wave of audio distortion cut through the file, followed by a loud, metallic explosion that ended the recording in deafening silence.

The laboratory fell dead quiet. Only the sound of the rain outside remained.

Clara looked at Vincent. The powerful mafia boss stood frozen, a deep, agonizing pain etching across his handsome features as he listened to his late wife's final words.

"Vincent..." Clara said softly, stepping closer to him, ignoring the formal titles for the first time. She reached out, her gentle hand resting over his forearm.

Vincent looked down at her hand on his sleeve. The icy rage inside him softened slightly under her gentle presence. He placed his large hand over hers, squeezing it with a raw, silent gratitude.

"She knew," Vincent whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "She knew he was coming for her."

Dominic stepped forward, his face dark. "Boss... the file cut off before she named the buyer in Europe. But we have enough to execute a family warrant against Julian."

"No," Vincent said, his gray-blue eyes turning back into cold stone. "Julian isn't acting alone. If we strike now, the buyer in Europe will cut their ties and vanish into the shadows. We wait until Julian meets his contact."

Suddenly, the laboratory door opened. One of Dominic’s senior security officers stepped inside, holding a glowing tablet.

"Mr. Rossi," the officer reported. "We just intercepted an encrypted radio transmission from Julian’s vehicle. He’s heading toward Pier 17 at the port. And he’s scheduled to meet a private cargo vessel arriving from London in thirty minutes."
