Chapter 17 - The Bloodline Vault

The air inside the Mithraic sanctuary was a swirling tempest of gun smoke, pulverized stone, and the deafening crack of automatic weapons. Ricochets whined off the ancient obsidian door of the vault, sending bright sparks showering into the darkness.

Vincent was an unstoppable force of nature.

He didn't take cover like an ordinary man; he used the subterranean terrain like a predator that had lived in the dark all his life. Rising from the wet stone, Vincent drew a tactical combat knife with his left hand while his right hand fired his custom Beretta with surgical, terrifying precision.

*Crack. Crack.*

Two Sovereign Council operators rushing through the dust collapsed into the rushing water before they could level their weapons. Vincent closed the distance on a third, ducking under a hail of assault rifle fire, driving his shoulder into the man’s sternum with the force of a freight train. The mercenary’s breath exploded from his lungs as Vincent slammed him against a broken travertine column, disarmed him in a blur of motion, and brought the butt of the rifle down with brutal efficiency.

"Arthur! Clara! Into the vault! NOW!" Vincent roared over the cacophony.

Arthur grabbed Leo by the waist, shielding the boy’s body with his own trench coat, while Clara scrambled across the wet floor, picking up a discarded submachine gun from a fallen operative.

Clara had never fired a weapon in her life until Julian’s attack on the Chicago estate. But the instinct to protect her son and the man she loved overrode every ounce of civilian hesitation. When a masked mercenary emerged from the settling dust, raising a shotgun directly toward Arthur and Leo, Clara didn't scream.

She leveled the submachine gun with both hands, planted her feet in the rushing water, and squeezed the trigger.

A three-round burst ripped through the mercenary’s chest armor, knocking him backward into the pool of the sacred spring.

"Move, Dad! Go!" Clara yelled, her voice raw with adrenaline, backing toward the massive obsidian opening as Vincent swept through the remaining attackers like a scythe through wheat.

Dominic pulled Elena fully inside the climate-controlled vault sanctuary. Elena was clutching her ribs, coughing through the dust, but she immediately grabbed a tactical sidearm from Dominic’s belt.

"I’m fine!" Elena gasped, spitting blood from a split lip. "Vincent! Behind you!"

Vincent spun.

Marcello Rossi was not fleeing. Driven by the psychotic realization that his life’s grand ambition was slipping through his bloody fingers, the Cardinal charged through the smoke, his heavy combat knife raised, lunging straight for Vincent’s throat!

"You arrogant bastard!" Marcello screamed, his ecclesiastical robes torn and soaked in filthy water. "Everything I built belongs to me! The Council answers to ME!"

Vincent didn't step back. He stepped directly *into* the strike.

Vincent’s left forearm snapped upward, intercepting Marcello’s wrist with bone-shattering force. The combat knife flew from the Cardinal's grip, splashing into the dark water. Before Marcello could recover, Vincent’s right hand closed around his uncle’s throat like a vise of solid iron, lifting the older man clean off his feet and slamming his back against the ancient altar of Mithras.

The impact knocked the breath from Marcello’s lungs with a sickening thud.

The remaining mercenaries were dead, floating face down in the subterranean spring or lying broken beneath the collapsed marble gallery. The gunfire ceased. Only the violent, ragged breathing of Vincent and the frantic dripping of water filled the vast underground chamber.

Marcello clawed desperately at Vincent’s fingers, his face turning purple, his feet dangling six inches above the stone floor. The gold pectoral cross hung crookedly across his chest.

"Nephew..." Marcello choked out, saliva and blood bubbling at the corners of his mouth. "You... you can't... the Church... the Council... will hunt you to the ends of the earth..."

"Let them come," Vincent whispered. His voice was terrifyingly calm, colder than the icy mountain spring rushing beneath their boots. His gray-blue eyes bored into his uncle’s soul without a shred of mercy. "Tell my father I kept my promise."

With a brutal, singular twist of his wrist, Vincent snapped Marcello’s neck.

The Cardinal’s body went limp. Vincent released his grip, letting the architect of ten years of agony drop unceremoniously into the mud at the base of the pagan altar.

Vincent stood over his uncle's corpse for three seconds, his chest heaving, his knuckles bloody. Then he turned on his heel, his eyes instantly scanning the cavern until they found Clara and Leo standing in the open doorway of the vault.

The feral, lethal monster that had just executed the head of the Sovereign Council instantly melted away.

Vincent walked toward them, dropping his weapon, his hands shaking slightly from the adrenaline crash. Clara ran forward, throwing herself against his chest. Vincent caught her, burying his face into her hair, his arms locking around her waist so tightly she could barely breathe.

"You're safe," Vincent murmured against her ear, his voice trembling with an emotion he only ever showed to her. "You're safe. Leo is safe."

Leo walked up, wrapping both arms around Vincent’s leg, burying his small face against his father’s damp trousers. Vincent dropped to one knee, pulling both Clara and Leo into a fierce, unbreakable embrace in the threshold of the ancient vault.

"Is it over?" Clara whispered through her tears, looking over Vincent’s shoulder at the dead Cardinal lying in the dark.

"No," Arthur Hayes’s voice echoed from within the vault sanctuary.

Vincent and Clara broke their embrace and turned.

Arthur was standing before the central quantum server bank in the heart of the vault. The screens were illuminated with cascades of green code, satellite feeds, and decrypted financial ledgers spanning seventy years.

Arthur’s face was pale. The single hazel eye that had looked upon world secrets for decades was wide with absolute shock.

"Dad?" Clara stepped inside the climate-controlled chamber, looking at the blinking monitors. "What is it? We have the Genesis Protocol. We have the proof to dismantle the Council."

"Look at the master registry, Clara," Arthur said, his hand trembling as he pointed toward the central terminal. "Marcello wasn't the head of the Council. He was only the Grand Inquisitor."

Vincent walked up to the screen, his gaze hardening as he read the decrypted hierarchy of the Sovereign Council.

At the very top of the pyramid sat a single name—a name that controlled the remaining eight families of Europe, the sovereign wealth funds of three continents, and a private army of ten thousand men.

A name that Don Vito and Arthur had never been able to unmask thirty years ago.

The screen refreshed. A high-resolution dossier unlocked, revealing an official international diplomatic passport issued forty-eight hours ago.

The photograph on the passport was of a woman in her late fifties, with piercing gray-blue eyes and regal, aristocratic features that mirrored Vincent Rossi’s face with terrifying precision.

Beneath the photograph, the name read:

*Victoria Rossi — Sovereign Supreme.*

Vincent stared at the screen, the breath locked in his throat.

May you like

"Mother?" Vincent whispered.
