Chapter 1 - Whispers at the Mansion Gate

The afternoon sun blazed over the manicured grounds of the estate, casting a golden light across the cobblestone driveway where an armored black SUV sat idling. Standing beside the vehicle, Ethan Caldwell adjusted the cuff of his dark suit jacket. At thirty-nine, Ethan was the undisputed ruler of Washington’s underground, known across the Eastern Seaboard as the Black King. His broad shoulders filled out the tailored fabric of his suit, while the open collar of his white dress shirt revealed the edge of dark, intricate tattoos creeping up his neck. His short beard and thick, curly dark brown hair framed a face of sharp, rugged masculinity, but his piercing eyes were cold as polished steel.

Behind him stood Marco, his long-time bodyguard and enforcer, standing six-foot-two in a fitted black suit, his sharp eyes scanning the tree line with practiced vigilance.

"The motorcade is prepped, Boss," Marco said in his low, gravelly baritone. "The jet at Dulles is fueled and ready for the flight to London."

"Good," Ethan replied, his voice a quiet rumble. "Make sure the perimeter guards stay double-manned while I'm out of the country. If anyone so much as breathes near my sons, put them in the ground."

"Understood," Marco nodded.

Before Ethan could step into the rear passenger seat, the heavy front doors of the estate swung open. Margaret, the family’s head housekeeper for over a decade, hurried down the stone steps. At fifty-eight, she carried herself with immaculate, aristocratic poise. Her blonde-gray hair was styled into a neat updo, and her dark-gray uniform was crisp and unwrinkled. Her rosy, fair skin looked warm in the sunlight, but behind her pale eyes lay a sharp, calculating mind.

She approached Ethan with an expression of frantic, tightly wound distress, placing a manicured hand over her heart as if struggling to catch her breath.

"Mr. Caldwell! Please, wait a moment," Margaret called out, her voice trembling just enough to project deep emotional turmoil.

Ethan paused, his hand resting on the heavy door of the SUV. He turned toward her, his brow furrowing slightly. "What is it, Margaret? I have a flight to catch."

Margaret stepped close, leaning toward Ethan so her voice wouldn't carry to the nearby security guards. She cast a fearful glance back toward the second-floor windows of the mansion before looking up into Ethan's piercing eyes.

"I cannot keep silent any longer, sir. My conscience will not allow it," Margaret whispered urgently, her eyes widening with manufactured horror. "It’s about Miss Morales. The new nanny."

Ethan’s body tensed instantly, his broad shoulders locking as his gaze turned lethal. "What about Lena?"

"It breaks my heart to say this, Mr. Caldwell, but you must know the truth before you leave," Margaret whispered, pointing an accusing, trembling finger toward the upper wing of the estate. "Your nanny abuses your sons when you're gone! The moment your car leaves the gates, she locks them away! I’ve heard them crying for hours while she ignores them!"

The air around the driveway seemed to freeze. Marco instinctively shifted his stance, his jaw clenching as he glanced at his boss.

Ethan didn't shout. He didn't explode. Instead, a terrifying, silent darkness washed over his rugged features. His jaw tightened so hard the muscle flexed along his cheekbone, and his piercing eyes narrowed into slits of pure, predatory rage.

"Repeat that," Ethan commanded, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

"It's true, sir!" Margaret insisted, her voice quivering with fake empathy. "She acts sweet and innocent when you are here, but behind closed doors, she is cruel to Nico and Noah. I tried to speak to her, but she threatened to tell you I was interfering! Please, Mr. Caldwell... do not leave those poor boys alone with that monster!"

Ethan stared at Margaret for three agonizing seconds. Every protective instinct in his body screamed for blood. Lena Morales had been hired two months ago—a twenty-five-year-old girl with golden-blonde hair and gentle blue eyes who seemed incapable of hurting a fly. If she had laid a hand on his one-year-old twin boys, he would make sure she vanished without a trace.

"Get in the car, Marco," Ethan said softly.

"Boss?" Marco asked, startled by the calm tone.

"We are leaving," Ethan said, stepping into the back seat of the armored SUV and slamming the door shut.

Margaret stepped back, bowing her head respectfully as the tinted window rolled up. A faint, imperceptible twitch of satisfaction touched the corner of her lips as the heavy vehicle pulled away down the winding driveway.

Inside the SUV, Ethan stared straight ahead, his luxury watch catching the light as his knuckles turned white against his knee.

"Are we heading to the airport, Boss?" Marco asked from the front seat, looking in the rearview mirror.

"No," Ethan growled, his voice laced with venom. "Drive past the main gates. Make sure Margaret sees us leave. Then circle back through the eastern forest road and pull up to the service entrance."

May you like

Marco’s eyes glinted with understanding. "You want to catch her in the act."

"If Margaret is telling the truth," Ethan whispered, his eyes blazing with dark fury, "Lena Morales won't live to see the sunset."
