Chapter 2 - The Decoy Return

The heavy black SUV glided past the iron security gates of the Caldwell estate, its dark windows masking the tension inside. To any onlooker—or anyone watching from the mansion's high windows—the Black King was en route to Dulles International Airport for an emergency trip overseas.

Two miles down the secluded highway, Marco abruptly veered the SUV onto a hidden gravel trail cutting through the dense forest surrounding the perimeter of the estate. The tires crunched quietly against the dirt as Marco brought the vehicle to a halt beneath the thick canopy of oak trees.

Ethan immediately unbuckled his seatbelt and pushed open the heavy door, stepping out into the cool shade. His black suit jacket rustled as he adjusted his posture, his heart hammering against his ribs in a rare, chaotic rhythm. He was a man who faced armed rival syndicates without blinking, but the thought of his infant sons suffering inside his own home made his blood run hot.

"Sensors on the eastern gate are disarmed, Boss," Marco said softly, stepping out beside him and checking the sidearm holstered beneath his black jacket. "We can slip through the service entrance without tripping the central security console in Margaret’s office."

"Good," Ethan grunted, rolling up the sleeves of his white dress shirt slightly, exposing the dark ink sprawling across his muscular forearms. "We enter quietly. No security guards, no alarms. I want to see everything with my own eyes."

"And if the housekeeper was telling the truth?" Marco asked, his rugged face hardening.

"Then I'll handle it myself," Ethan replied coldly.

They moved through the dense forest like shadows. Ethan’s long strides carried him swiftly across the grounds until they reached the low stone wall bordering the mansion's rear service courtyard. The estate was massive—a grand, brick fortress built by Ethan’s father, designed to withstand a siege. Yet today, the threat wasn't an invading rival gang; it was a quiet betrayal within its walls.

Ethan pushed open the heavy wrought-iron service door, which creaked softly on its hinges. He stepped into the cool, stone-paved corridor that led directly to the kitchen and staff quarters. The hallway was silent, save for the hum of the central climate control.

Marco followed closely, his hand resting on his weapon, scanning every doorway. "Quiet. Too quiet for mid-afternoon."

"Where are the boys usually at this hour?" Ethan asked in a low whisper, his eyes fixed on the long corridor ahead.

"In the main sunroom off the grand living room," Marco whispered back. "Miss Morales usually keeps them there after their lunch."

Ethan’s jaw set into a rigid line. He remembered Margaret’s words, echoing in his mind like a strike: She locks them away! I’ve heard them crying for hours!

He advanced down the hallway, his polished black leather shoes striking the floor with silent, deliberate precision. Every step heightened the fury rising in his chest. He had brought Lena Morales into his home because she appeared gentle, kindhearted, and devoted. Her soft voice and sweet demeanor had seemed like a blessing for two boys who had lost their mother at birth. If that gentle exterior was nothing more than a disguise to torture his sons, Ethan knew he would never forgive himself for being so blind.

They reached the heavy, carved double doors of the grand living room. The polished mahogany doors were pulled almost shut, leaving a narrow, three-inch crack of golden light spilling out into the corridor.

Ethan stopped just outside the doorway. He held up a hand, signaling Marco to stay back.

He leaned in close to the crack in the door, listening intently. His breathing was shallow, his broad chest rising and falling as he prepared himself for the worst—for the sound of his boys crying in distress, or the harsh, cruel voice of a fake nanny.

He raised his hand, his fingers curling into a heavy fist as he prepared to shove the doors open and unleash his wrath. He took a deep, steadying breath, his piercing eyes narrowing with lethal intent as he pushed the mahogany door inward.
