Chapter 6 - The Unlocking Door

The heavy brass handle of Margaret’s office door turned slowly.

The dark mahogany door swung open with a low, deliberate creak, revealing the shadowed interior of the housekeeper's private sanctuary.

Ethan stood motionless in the center of the living room doorway, his broad shoulders squared, his tailored black suit framing a figure of absolute, terrifying power. Beside him, Marco stepped into the hallway, his sharp eyes locked on the opening door, his hand ready on his weapon.

Behind Ethan, inside the sunlit living room, Lena held the crying twins tightly against her pale-yellow dress, her hands gently patting their backs as she tried to soothe their fears, though her own heart was pounding frantically against her ribs.

From the dark doorway of the office, a figure stepped out into the hallway.

Margaret emerged slowly, her dark-gray uniform pristine, her blonde-gray hair styled without a single strand out of place. Her cold, calculating eyes swept over Marco, then traveled down the corridor until they locked directly onto Ethan Caldwell.

She did not look surprised. She did not flinch. She did not show a single trace of fear or panic at seeing the man who was supposed to be on a private jet to London.

Instead, a slow, chilling smile spread across Margaret’s face—a smile that was unnatural, confident, and dripping with sinister arrogance.

"You weren't supposed to come back, Ethan," Margaret said softly, her voice unnaturally calm, echoing through the quiet hallway.

Ethan took a slow, heavy step forward, his polished black shoes striking the floor with a rhythmic, deadly rhythm. "Is that right, Margaret?"

"Yes," Margaret replied, smoothing down the front of her dark-gray uniform with calm precision. "You were supposed to be ten thousand feet in the air. You were supposed to receive a phone call in London informing you that your sweet little nanny had been arrested for child endangerment."

Lena gasped softly from the living room, her blue eyes widening in terror as the full extent of Margaret's plot was laid bare.

Ethan stopped five feet away from the housekeeper, his towering height completely shadowing her. His short beard and rugged features were set in stone, his dark tattoos visible beneath his open dress shirt.

"You lied to me," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that usually made grown men drop to their knees. "You abused my sons. You threatened Lena. And you thought you could use my name to cover your tracks."

Margaret laughed—a quiet, bitter sound that held no warmth. "Abused? Please, Ethan. Those boys are spoiled, soft, and undisciplined. Just like their mother was."

Marco’s eyes flared with rage. "Watch your mouth, old woman."

"Shut up, Marco," Margaret snapped coldly, turning her sharp, pale eyes back to Ethan. "You think you rule this city, Ethan Caldwell? You think because men call you the Black King, you are invincible inside these walls?"

"You have five seconds to give me a reason not to let Marco put a bullet through your head," Ethan growled, his piercing eyes burning with lethal intent.

Margaret’s chilling smile widened. She slowly raised her right hand, holding a small, silver remote control between her fingers.

"Do it," Margaret whispered sinisterly. "Tell him to shoot me. And the moment my thumb leaves this button, the encrypted server in my office will automatically broadcast ten years of the Caldwell syndicate’s financial records directly to the FBI, the US Attorney's Office, and every rival crime family in Washington."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits, but he didn't move an inch.
