Chapter 3 - Laughter in the Sunroom

The heavy mahogany door swung open silently, revealing the vast, sun-drenched living room. Bright golden light poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the plush white carpets, colorful plush toys, and elegant furniture.
Ethan stood frozen in the doorway, his hand still resting on the polished brass handle, his chest heaving with cold fury. Marco stepped up behind him, his hand instantly freezing over his holster.
The scene before them was not a nightmare of abuse or neglected children.
In the center of the room, sitting on a thick, fluffy carpet surrounded by soft building blocks and colorful stuffed animals, was Lena Morales.
The twenty-five-year-old nanny looked stunning in the warm sunlight. She wore a pale-yellow maid dress trimmed with delicate white lace, a crisp white apron tied neatly at her waist, and a white ruffled headband resting atop her long, golden-blonde hair, which was styled in a charmingly messy updo. Her fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with warmth, and her expressive blue eyes sparkled with pure, unadulterated joy.
She was down on her hands and knees, giggling soft, musical laughter as she pretended to be a friendly lion, chasing the one-year-old identical twins across the carpet.
Nico and Noah were ecstatic. Both little boys had soft golden-blonde hair, round rosy cheeks, and bright blue eyes that mirrored Lena's. They were dressed in matching turquoise-blue pajamas decorated with little brown teddy bears.
"I'm gonna get you!" Lena laughed playfully, her voice light and musical as she gently tickled Noah's tummy.
Noah collapsed onto his back on the soft carpet, squealing with uncontrollable delight, his tiny hands kicking in the air as he giggled. Beside him, Nico crawled as fast as his chubby legs could carry him, scrambling directly onto Lena's back and wrapping his tiny arms around her neck, letting out a high-pitched laugh.
"Oh no! Nico caught me!" Lena gasped dramatically, collapsing softly onto her side on the carpet, taking both boys into a warm, protective embrace. "You two are way too fast for me!"
Both twins tumbled into her lap, burying their little faces against her white apron, giggling hysterically as she showered their rosy cheeks with gentle kisses. The affection between them was so raw, so natural, and so profound that the room seemed to radiate pure warmth.
Outside the threshold, Ethan Caldwell felt the breath leave his lungs.
His dark, furious expression collapsed in an instant. The lethal rage that had consumed his mind vanished, replaced by a sudden, overwhelming wave of stunned disbelief. His piercing eyes widened, staring at the woman he had been ready to execute moments ago.
Marco let out a quiet, bewildered breath beside him. "Boss... what the hell?"
Ethan didn't answer. He stood entirely motionless, his broad shoulders dropping slightly as he watched Lena gently adjust the collar of Nico's turquoise pajamas. She stroked the toddler's soft golden curls with a tenderness that no money could buy—a tenderness that was entirely genuine.
Lena laughed softly, resting her cheek against Noah's head as she rocked the twins back and forth. "Who's my brave little boy, huh? Is it Noah? Or is it Nico?"
"Me! Me!" Noah babied happily, clapping his chubby hands against her knees.
Ethan stared at her face, reading every subtle micro-expression. There was no deceit here. There was no fear, no cruelty, no resentment. Lena Morales truly, deeply loved his sons, and his sons adored her with every fiber of their innocent hearts.
A knot tightened in Ethan’s chest—not of anger, but of profound, unsettling confusion. He looked at the warm, golden scene playing out on the carpet, and then thought back to Margaret’s frantic, accusing voice outside his SUV: Your nanny abuses your sons when you're gone!
Why would Margaret lie? Why would the housekeeper who had served his family for ten years invent such a horrific story to get a gentle, loving nanny fired?

Before Ethan could process the thought, a soft rustle of carpet drew his attention back to the center of the room.
Nico had stopped giggling. The little boy sat up, his bright blue eyes turning toward the open doorway.
