Chapter 7 - The Black King's Fury

The silence in the hallway was suffocating. The air felt heavy, charged with the threat of total destruction.
Marco stood rigid, his hand still on his sidearm, his eyes darting from Margaret’s smug, cold face to the small silver transmitter held tightly in her fingers.
Inside the living room, Lena held Nico and Noah close, her breath hitching as she listened to the confrontation. Though she didn't fully understand the complex criminal empire Ethan controlled, she knew the terrifying weight of what was happening.
Ethan Caldwell didn't flinch. He stood towering over Margaret, his broad chest rising and falling in slow, controlled breaths. The Black King had survived betrayals, assassination attempts, and syndicate wars. He was not a man to be cornered in his own home.
"A deadman's switch," Ethan said softly, his voice devoid of fear, carrying a cold, mocking authority. "You really thought this through, didn't you, Margaret?"
"I've worked in this house for ten years, Ethan," Margaret sneered, her polite facade entirely stripped away, revealing the manipulative, power-hungry woman beneath. "I managed your father's books before he died. I managed yours. I watched you build this empire, and I ensured I always had insurance. I was content to stay here, running this estate, controlling this family. But then you brought her in."
Margaret pointed an accusing, venomous finger toward the living room where Lena sat.
"A twenty-five-year-old girl!" Margaret spat bitterly. "A nobody! And suddenly, those boys look to her instead of me! Suddenly, you listen to her opinions on the household! I was being replaced, Ethan. And I do not allow myself to be replaced."
"You were never family, Margaret," Ethan said coldly, his deep voice cutting through her bitter tirade like a blade. "You were an employee. A servant."
Margaret’s face twisted with sudden, ugly rage. "I made this house run! And if I cannot control it, I will burn it to the ground! You step one inch closer, Ethan, and your entire empire crumbles by nightfall!"
Ethan took a step forward anyway.
His polished black leather shoe struck the stone floor with an echoing thud. He didn't look at the silver transmitter in her hand. He looked directly into her cold, calculating eyes, his piercing gaze radiating an absolute, unstoppable menace that made Margaret’s triumphant smile falter for the very first time.
"You think the FBI frightens me?" Ethan whispered, stepping so close that Margaret had to tilt her head back to look up at his rugged, tattooed face. "You think rival families frighten me? I am the Black King, Margaret. I own the judges. I own the prosecutors. And if my empire burns, I will build a new one over your grave."
Margaret swallowed hard, a sudden flicker of genuine terror finally piercing her cold exterior. Her thumb trembled slightly against the silver button.
"Marco," Ethan commanded softly, never breaking eye contact with Margaret.
"Yes, Boss?" Marco replied, stepping up behind her.

"Call the tech team upstairs," Ethan ordered, his voice smooth as silk. "Tell them to cut the mansion's external fiber-optic line and jam all cellular frequencies within a two-mile radius. Do it now."
Margaret’s eyes widened in sudden, blind panic. "What?!"
