Chapter 8 - Shattered Illusion

Margaret’s hand shook violently as she stared at Ethan. She pressed her thumb down hard on the silver button, her voice shrill with sudden desperation. "It's a radio-frequency transmitter, Ethan! The moment I press it, the signal goes to the central server in the basement!"

Ethan didn't even blink. "Do you really think I didn't know you had an offshore server, Margaret?"

Margaret froze, her face draining of all color.

From the end of the corridor, a tall young man in a dark suit walked out of the basement stairwell, holding a black military-grade signal jammer in one hand and a severed bundle of fiber-optic cables in the other.

"Basement server is completely isolated, Mr. Caldwell," the tech enforcer reported calmly. "No signals are leaving this estate."

Margaret looked from the tech enforcer to Ethan, her smug, manipulative leverage evaporating into dust in a matter of seconds. The silver transmitter in her hand was nothing more than a useless piece of plastic.

With a swift, terrifying motion, Ethan reached out and grabbed Margaret by the wrist. His broad, tattooed hand closed around her skin like a vise of solid steel. He didn't squeeze hard enough to break bones, but his grip was absolute, completely immobilizing her.

"Aah!" Margaret gasped, dropping the useless silver remote onto the floor, where it shattered into pieces beneath Ethan’s shoe.

"Ten years," Ethan growled, his deep voice vibrating with absolute fury as he looked down at her. "Ten years I allowed you to live under my roof, eat at my table, and manage my home. And you used that time to terrorize two motherless boys."

"Ethan... please!" Margaret stammered, her cold arrogance completely shattered, replaced by the raw, pathetic fear of a caught predator. "I... I served your father! I served you! You can't do this!"

"You didn't serve anyone but yourself," Ethan replied coldly.

He turned his head toward Marco. "Take her to the basement holding cell. I don't want her out of sight until I decide what to do with her."

"With pleasure, Boss," Marco growled, stepping forward and grabbing Margaret’s arms, pulling her away from Ethan with rough efficiency.

"Ethan! You can't do this to me!" Margaret shrieked, her voice echoing frantically down the corridor as Marco dragged her toward the basement stairs. "I know everything about you! I know your secrets! Ethan!"

The heavy door to the basement stairwell slammed shut, cutting off her shrill screams, leaving the long hallway in sudden, blessed silence.

Ethan stood alone in the corridor for a moment, his chest heaving as he smoothed down the front of his tailored black suit jacket. He took a deep, steadying breath, forcing the violent, dark energy of the Black King to recede, replacing it once again with the protective focus of a father.

He turned back toward the living room doorway.

Lena was standing just inside the entrance, holding Nico and Noah in her arms. The twins had stopped crying, their bright blue eyes watching their father with wide, curious wonder. Lena looked at Ethan, her rosy cheeks flushed, her blue eyes filled with an overwhelming mix of relief, awe, and quiet respect.

Ethan walked slowly back into the sun-drenched room, his steps soft against the thick carpet.
