Chapter 10 - Shadows Beyond the Gates

The sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Washington sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold. Inside the estate, the grand dining room was filled with warmth and light as Ethan, Lena, and the twins sat together, enjoying a quiet, peaceful dinner.

For the first time since the death of his wife, the massive, cold mansion felt like a real home. Nico and Noah were laughing happily in their high chairs, smearing mashed potatoes across their trays while Lena gently wiped their rosy cheeks, her soft giggles echoing through the room.

Ethan sat at the head of the long table, resting his chin on his hand, his piercing eyes watching Lena with an unreadable, intense warmth. The Black King, feared by the most dangerous men in the country, had found his peace in the quiet presence of a kindhearted nanny.

Suddenly, Marco walked quietly into the dining room. His rugged face was serious, his posture rigid. He approached Ethan, leaning down to whisper into his ear.

"Boss," Marco said in a low, grave tone. "We finished searching Margaret’s office and her private residence in Virginia."

Ethan’s smile faded slightly, his sharp eyes flicking to Marco. "And?"

"She wasn't working alone, Ethan," Marco whispered, his voice laced with cold tension. "We found encrypted satellite phones and wire transfers originating from Chicago. The Moretti syndicate."

Ethan’s jaw tightened, his broad shoulders locking beneath his shirt. The Moretti family was his fiercest rival—a brutal syndicate that had been trying to expand into Washington for years.

"Margaret was selling them information about your routines, your security protocols, and your sons," Marco continued, his voice dropping lower so Lena wouldn't hear. "She was trying to get Lena fired so she could replace her with a nanny plant sent by Moretti."

Ethan sat perfectly still, his luxury watch catching the warm chandelier light. The realization settled over him like ice. The threat to his family hadn't started with Margaret, and it certainly didn't end with her arrest. A larger, far more dangerous war was brewing beyond the gates of his estate.

"Where is Margaret now?" Ethan asked quietly.

"In the basement, locked down," Marco replied. "She hasn't talked yet, but she knows Moretti’s primary contact in the city."

Ethan looked across the table. Lena was leaning over Noah’s high chair, laughing softly as the little boy pressed a toy bear against her cheek. She looked up, her bright blue eyes meeting Ethan’s, offering him a sweet, trusting smile.

Ethan felt a fierce, terrifying protectiveness surge through his chest. He had spent years fighting for power, for territory, for money. But looking at Lena and his twin sons, he realized he finally had something priceless to fight for—something he would tear the world apart to protect.

Ethan stood up from the table, smoothing down his black trousers.

"Marco," Ethan commanded softly, his deep baritone carrying an absolute, lethal authority.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Ready the team," Ethan said, his piercing eyes burning with dark, cold fury as he looked toward the curtained windows overlooking the dark estate grounds. "We are going to pay the Moretti family a visit."

He turned back to Lena, his expression softening instantly into a warm, reassuring look.

"I have some business to attend to downstairs, Lena," Ethan said gently, reaching out to stroke Nico’s golden curls. "I'll be back shortly."

Lena smiled up at him, her blue eyes shining with quiet trust. "We'll be right here, Ethan."

As Ethan turned and walked out of the room alongside Marco, his mind was already calculating every move, every strategy for the coming conflict. The Black King was back on his throne, and anyone who dared to threaten his family would learn the true meaning of his wrath.
