Chapter 20 - IVY AND OWEN LEARN THE WHOLE STORY

At twelve, the twins asked why Vanessa had moved out when they were little.
They knew fragments.
Time for more.
I explained:
Vanessa wanted a foundation job.
She used household staff for foundation events without reporting the real cost clearly enough.
She convinced Grandma Florence to reduce services under misleading reasons.
Then she became angry when Grandma challenged her.
Meals and laundry became part of that pressure.
The twins were affected.
Then I added:
“I did not know because I was not paying enough attention.”
Ivy stared.
“You were in the house.”
“Yes.”
Owen said:
“That’s worse.”
“Yes.”
Children do not protect parental ego unless adults train them to.
Good.
Then Ivy asked Vanessa herself:
“Did you mean for us to be hungry?”
Vanessa answered:
“I knew meals were being delayed. I told myself it wasn’t serious. That was wrong.”
Precise.
Then:
“Did you hate us?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because loving someone does not automatically stop you from making selfish choices.”
