Vanessa never became Chief External Partnerships Officer at the Moretti Foundation.
That door closed.
Years later, she joined another nonprofit as a development consultant.
Small contract.
No family name required.
Then larger.
Eventually she became vice president of advancement for a regional children’s-health organization.
Independent hiring.

She became good at the work.
Maybe better because she finally understood full cost.
At one budget meeting, a younger fundraiser proposed using unpaid intern labor for a donor event.
Vanessa apparently said:
“If the event only works because somebody invisible is paying the cost, put the cost on the page.”
