Chapter 8 - VANESSA’S INTERVIEW

Vanessa gave a formal statement through counsel.

I was not present.

Samuel summarized.

She admitted presenting the service forms to Florence.

Admitted describing them as housekeeping simplification.

Denied intending to mislead.

Admitted reassigning staff.

Said family philanthropy had historically relied on household support and she believed the cost allocation was acceptable pending reconciliation.

Admitted the hiring-committee presentation highlighted low initiative operating costs.

Denied knowingly falsifying financial statements because final allocations had not yet closed.

That distinction would matter.

Then the children.

She admitted telling them they could help.

Denied intentionally withholding food.

Said Florence repeatedly refused to eat before chores were complete because Florence “wanted to prove a point.”

My mother denied that.

Conflicting statements.

Then Vanessa admitted one phrase.

“Earn your place.”

Why?

She was angry.

At Florence.

At me.

At the house.

At what?

Her answer:

“Everyone in Villa Moretti has a permanent place except me.”

There.

We were getting closer.

Vanessa was my wife.

Beautiful clothes.

Private suite.

Cars.

Money.

Social influence.

Yet psychologically, she considered herself temporary.

Why?

Because the villa ownership predated our marriage.

Florence’s residence rights were written.

The twins’ place was automatic as my children.

My own interests came through family entities.

Vanessa lived there because she was married to me.

If we divorced, her residential rights would end subject to marital arrangements.

She knew.

That fact had bothered her more over time.

Then the foundation role appeared.

A professional title would belong to her.

Not to Mrs. Moretti.

Not dependent on marriage.

She wanted it badly.

Again:

Understandable.

The method was not.

Then Vanessa told the interviewer:

“Florence looked at me like I was a guest using family resources to play executive.”

Did Florence say that?

Almost.

“You’re making the house pay for your career.”

Same wound.

Vanessa then retaliated by forcing Florence to experience dependence as humiliation.

That was why the dinner became symbolic.

The apron.

The leftovers.

Under my roof.

May you like

Vanessa was trying to make the one woman with permanent rights feel like a guest.

Because she felt like one herself.
