Chapter 22 - Nora’s Photograph

The Cape Cod photograph went back to Ivy.

Not police evidence forever.

They photographed and authenticated note.

Rebecca retained legal copy.

Original belonged to family.

I asked Ivy:

“Do you want it in your room?”

“Yes.”

Then two weeks later:

“No.”

Why?

“It makes suitcase.”

Association.

We put it in a drawer.

Months later she asked again.

Placed on bookshelf.

No ceremony.

The handwriting remained on back.

I did not cover it.

At six, she asked:

“What words?”

I read only age-appropriate part:

Mom wanted Dad to know that you should never travel somewhere without Dad knowing and saying yes.

“Celeste did?”

“She tried.”

“Nolan too?”

“He helped.”

“Mom knew?”

“She worried something like that could happen.”

Ivy looked at Nora’s face.

“Mommy saved?”

I took time.

“Mommy left information that helped me understand.”

“Saved me?”

“I came home and opened suitcase.”

Children want heroes.

Truth can hold several.

“Mom tried to protect you before she died. I protected you when I came home. Police and doctors helped after.”

Ivy nodded.
