Chapter 23 - Nora Was Not Always Right

As Ivy grew, I worked deliberately not to make Nora infallible.
At six:
“Mommy liked broccoli?”
“No.”
“Mommy never mad?”
“She got mad.”
“At me?”
“Sometimes when you threw food.”
“Did she yell?”
“Yes.”
“Bad?”
“Sometimes adults yell too much.”
A dead mother can become impossible competition if survivors turn her into perfection.
Celeste had partly reacted to that.
I would not repeat.
I told Ivy funny stories.
Nora losing keys.
Nora reversing into mailbox.
Nora refusing to admit she needed glasses.
Nora once forgetting our anniversary and then accusing me of:
“remembering aggressively.”
Ivy laughed.
Nora became person.
Not warning system.
Not martyr.
May you like
That helped Ivy remember without carrying grief as duty.
