Chapter 9 - Rebecca Hall’s Blue Folder

Rebecca retrieved the archive.
Blue folder.
Exactly as Nora wrote.
Contents:
Original three-day caregiver authorization.
Nolan’s expanded PDF version.
Emails.
Passport-service inquiry.
Nora’s handwritten chronology.
Rebecca’s legal memorandum.
One audio recording Nora had made of a meeting with Rebecca.
Lawful because everyone present knew it was being recorded for note-taking.
No secret wire.
Nora’s voice.
I had not heard it in months.
I nearly stopped the playback.
Rebecca asked:
“What worries you most?”
Nora:
“Not that Celeste will kidnap Ivy tomorrow.”
Then:
“That she thinks helping gives her a claim.”
There.
Rebecca:
“Has she said that?”
Nora:
“She said if I die, Grant will need someone who already knows Ivy.”
Then:
“She said, ‘It would be easier if Ivy already thought of me as family.’”
Not criminal.
Boundary.
Nora continued:
“Nolan sent me travel forms I never asked for. Celeste keeps talking about trips she could take Ivy on if I get too sick. I’m dying and everyone is planning around me like I’ve already left the room.”
That sentence broke me.
Rebecca:
“Have you told Grant?”
Nora:
“He thinks I’m afraid of replacement because I’m dying.”
Silence.
Then:
“I am afraid of replacement because I’m dying.”
Honest.
“But that doesn’t mean I’m imagining this.”
There.
Nora’s fear could be both psychologically understandable and factually grounded.
Rebecca asked what Nora wanted.
“Preserve the paperwork. If Grant marries her someday, that’s his life. But if she tries to take Ivy out of the country, tell him everything.”
Why that trigger?
Because Nora did not want to govern my future from the grave.
That was more generous than I deserved.
She did not write:
Never marry Celeste.
She wrote:
If she tries to take Ivy, tell him.
Boundary.
May you like
Celeste crossed it.
