Chapter 14 - The family office audit

The audit widened beyond Bellacourt.

Why?

Because if one spouse could route vendors through relatives, controls were weak.

Three-year review.

Findings:

Most family-office vendors properly disclosed.

Two small conflicts missed.

One cousin’s landscaping company.

One niece’s event photography firm.

Both disclosed informally but not on forms.

No major overcharging.

Then household spend.

My own residence had been excessive.

Before Vanessa’s pilot:

Food waste averaged:

$5,000 monthly discarded/canceled.

Staffing overlaps.

Luxury grocery deliveries unused.

Florence had complained years earlier.

I ignored.

Vanessa was right that the household needed controls.

She was wrong to make children absorb them.

Independent consultant redesigned budget.

Food costs reduced by:

22%.

Without missed meals.

Without Bellacourt.

Domestic labor reduced modestly through scheduling.

No unpaid Florence.

That became uncomfortable.

Because Vanessa could later argue:

“See? My diagnosis was right.”

It was.

Method still abusive.

Then family meeting procedure changed.

No related-party vendor approval without independent conflict check.

No household pilot metrics based on under-one-month data.

No family member signature page accepted unless complete document electronically bound or page-numbered.

No one wanted to hear that such a basic control had been missing.

But it had.
