Chapter 6 - The family meeting still happened

I almost canceled.

Samuel stopped me.

“If Vanessa expected approval tonight, let everyone hear the evidence.”

So at 8:17, family meeting began.

Not in dining room.

Library.

Present:

My mother.

My older sister Cecilia by video.

Two cousins.

Family office CFO.

Independent administrator.

Samuel.

Me.

Vanessa attended with counsel? She didn't yet have counsel. Better she attended on her own request with Bellacourt proposal.

Adrian Voss joined remotely.

I placed two documents on table.

Original two-page authorization.

Twenty-eight-page packet.

Then asked Vanessa:

“Which did Florence sign?”

She said:

“The household plan.”

“Which document?”

“The authorization packet.”

Florence said:

“No.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“You approved it.”

“I approved food and temporary staff.”

“You signed service authorization.”

“Not this.”

Then Adrian.

“Mr. Voss, did Florence review your management terms?”

“I was told approval had been obtained.”

“By whom?”

He looked at Vanessa.

“Mrs. Moretti.”

Then Samuel read email:

I have Florence’s approval page. Build final packet around it before Monday.

Silence.

Vanessa said:

“That is being taken out of context.”

“What context makes it acceptable?”

“She approved the plan conceptually.”

Florence said:

“I did not.”

Then family office administrator suspended Bellacourt proposal.

No vote.

Existing pilot terminated pending legal review.

Not because I ordered.

Because consent defective and child-safety concerns made data unreliable.

Then Vanessa said:

“You’re killing a cost program because your mother didn’t read what she signed.”

Florence stood.

“I read what I signed.”

That sentence shifted room.

Then Cecilia asked:

“Why were Ivy and Owen hungry?”

Vanessa:

“They were not starving.”

No one had used that word.

Then:

“Why was Mother wearing an apron?”

“Because she insisted on interfering with staff workflow.”

Cecilia removed her glasses.

“You put our mother on service rotation?”

Vanessa:

“She volunteered.”

Florence laughed once.

Ugly.

Then family office CFO asked:

“Who owns Bellacourt?”

“Adrian.”

“Any related parties?”

“No.”

Vanessa answered too fast.

Samuel looked at me.

There.

A new question.
