Chapter 21 - Florence’s civil settlement

Florence’s claims against Bellacourt and Vanessa mediated.

Bellacourt argued:

It relied on Vanessa.

It returned pilot fees.

It did not threaten Florence’s residence directly.

True.

Vanessa made threat.

Bellacourt still accepted signature without direct verification.

Settlement:

Bellacourt paid Florence:

$85,000

including attorney fees/damages.

No admission of elder abuse.

Agreed to:

Client signature verification controls for resident-service programs.

No reuse of generic signature pages without complete packet identifiers.

Vanessa separately paid:

$60,000

to settle Florence’s personal coercion/document claims.

Could insurance cover part?

Vanessa’s personal umbrella insurer reserved rights and contributed to settlement after legal negotiation? Maybe. Keep simpler: her insurer paid $35k, Vanessa $25k. But too much detail. Not necessary.

Florence donated nothing.

Kept money.

Her decision.

Then she used some to renovate east apartment kitchen? Could be. Not symbolic.
