Chapter 8 - Florence tells me what happened

My mother had been embarrassed.
That was why she did not tell me sooner.
Not frightened of Vanessa physically.
Ashamed that she had let someone turn her into a servant in her son’s home.
“I thought you approved.”
“Why?”
“She showed me messages.”
“What messages?”
Vanessa forwarded:
Gianluca wants everyone participating. No more waste.
Had I written that?
Partly.
I had texted Vanessa from Chicago:
Household costs are absurd. Cut waste. Everyone needs to cooperate.
She forwarded to Florence as proof.
I had not said:
Make my mother serve.
I had not said:
Withhold toddler meals.
But my message created cover.
Then Florence said:
“She told me the family meeting would decide whether I could keep living here.”
My stomach went cold.
“What?”
“She said if Bellacourt plan showed I contributed nothing, others might object to east apartment expense.”
Vanessa had no authority to revoke Florence’s occupancy license.
It was contractual.
Could family office debate maintenance costs?
Yes.
Could they evict her because she refused dishes?
No.
But Florence did not know details.
Vanessa did.
That made threat manipulative.
Then meals.
When Florence asked for larger portions for twins, Vanessa said:
“Every override destroys the pilot numbers.”
There.
Data over children.
Then nanny.
Rachel Moore objected.
Vanessa suspended her.
Why no call to me?
Rachel emailed.
My executive assistant’s spam filter? Too convenient.
Better: Rachel emailed Vanessa and household administrator, not me, because chain required. Then she texted my personal assistant, who said I was in closed meetings and forwarded concern to Vanessa, who responded matter resolved.
System failure.
Then Florence tried calling me.
Three times.
I trusted Vanessa’s summary.
My part again.
Then mother said:
“You believe people who sound calm.”
I almost smiled.
“So do you.”
“Yes.”

That was why Vanessa had been effective.
She never shouted while creating harm.
