Chapter 10 - What Marina Meant by “Heir”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Jonathan finally understood.

“The Founders’ Ledger.”

Victor frowned.

“What?”

An original Bellini trust document created by Victor’s grandfather.

Most terms had been digitized decades ago.

One physical ledger remained locked in the family archive.

Jonathan pulled the scanned index.

A provision had been omitted from later summaries because nobody believed it would ever matter.

TWINS.

Victor stared.

Under the original Bellini succession rules, twins did not follow simple birth order.

If both survived thirty days, the founder’s controlling block was divided equally between them.

Gabriel was not the sole heir.

Rose and Gabriel were equal.

Marina’s entire “real heir” claim was false.

Or perhaps deliberately misleading.

“Why would she hide Gabriel, then?”

Jonathan turned the page.

Because if one twin was recorded dead before thirty days, the surviving twin received the entire founder block.

Rose should therefore currently hold it.

But the trust administrator had never transferred it.

Why?

Because another document had been filed after Elena’s death.

A waiver.

Supposedly signed by Victor.

It suspended Rose’s founder-block rights until age twenty-five.

Victor stared.

“I never signed that.”

Jonathan looked grim.

The waiver named an interim trustee.

Marina.

Victor laughed once.

There it was.

The complete scheme.

Gabriel had to appear dead.

Rose’s rights had to be suspended.

Then Marina could control the dormant founder block.

After marriage, she planned to reveal Gabriel, invoke the twin provision, and use forged guardianship rights to claim control of his half too.

Eventually, she would oversee both children’s shares.

Nearly the entire legacy block.

Victor whispered—

“She wasn’t choosing Gabriel over Rose.”

“No.”

Jonathan looked sick.

“She wanted both of them legally helpless.”

Victor immediately ordered the trust frozen.

The independent bank complied within the hour.

Millions in voting rights and distributions were suspended.

Marina’s access vanished.

Her leverage collapsed.

Then investigators traced her airport movements.

She had never boarded a plane.

Instead, surveillance showed her entering a car driven by Richard Sloan.

Her attorney.

They headed north.

Toward Saint Matthew’s records warehouse.

Victor understood.

“She’s going after originals.”

Detective Cole nodded.

“If she destroys the underlying records, she can argue the digital files were altered.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“Not successfully.”

“But she thinks she can.”

Police headed toward the warehouse.

Victor remained behind.

This time by choice.

Rose and Gabriel were with him.

His children had already spent enough of their lives being used as pieces in adult battles.

Then his phone received a photograph.

Sent from Marina.

A burning metal file cabinet.

Below it:

YOU CAN’T PROVE WHAT NEVER EXISTED.

Victor stared.

Then Jonathan smiled unexpectedly.

“What?”

Jonathan held up Elena’s flash drive.

“She forgot something.”

“What?”

“The video includes the original document number.”

A number that linked directly to an off-site state archive.

Marina was burning copies.

The originals were somewhere she couldn’t reach.

👉 Marina believed she had destroyed the paper trail—but Elena had accidentally preserved the one reference number that could restore every record Marina tried to erase.
